I saw this yesterday at a track meet in the UK - what do you think? Too fast too young? I was there with my boy who was running in a much slower paced race and thought this was an incredible result for a young girl. She is coached by her dad which does instantly ring some alarm bells and the parents were very intense track side.
Certainly not a world beater. If she was in the sub-2:05 range it would be a lot more impressive.
It would be a record in the US if she turns(ed) 12 this year. If she is turning 13 later this year, no.
She turns 13 next year. I thought that was a FAST time. It's gone on the UK all time best list for the age group.
Really sub 2:05 for a 12 year old?? That's crazy.
I think in a lot of ways it doesn't matter what you do when you're 13, it's too young. At least if you're slightly older (youth or U20) and you run well you can actually get some kind of success. She's probably been coached quite intensely to get that result and I'm not sure it's any indication of long term success. Someone I used to run with/against held the record for one of the ages on the 800m on this list

If the parents were very intense track side I'm not sure that's a good indication either, but who knows.

I agree that at 12 it doesn't really matter how fast you run. It doesn't leave a lot of room for gradual improvement.
2.02 at 14 (Mary Decker) is incredible but I wonder how hard she worked from a young age in relation to her natural talent (which she obviously had a lot of).
The girl I saw run yesterday strikes me as someone who is working very hard to reach those times.... the father was extremely intense.

Decker won her first race aged 11. She allegedly ran a 3:05 marathon at 12, which is credible given that the world record for that age is 2:54.

That's actually the performance listed as 1st on the all time list except that is was at Tavistock not Exter. They read it out as 2.13 but it turns out it's 2.14... still good enough for 1st on all time list I suppose.
I'm fairly new to this whole athletics thing as my son has only just started but I was pretty surprised by the time. Looking at the GB and US records though I guess it's not that unusual.
