Recently I have heard that it is somewhat common for a group of college runners to get summer jobs/take classes somewhere at altitude and are able to train together the whole summer. Is this actually practical/where would kids actually go to train?

The runners from Carolina, as far as I know, didn't get jobs or take classes in Colorado (because that could/would be considered a transfer to the NCAA), but they paid to go stay in CO and train. Some for a couple of weeks, some for the entire summer.
