The ultimate measure of patriotism is how many people will march off to die as cannonfodder for their country. There were more Germans killed in world war 1 - not a defensive war for them - than Americans killed in all wars in history.
Imagine the US attempting a war on foreign soil involving 2 million US dead. Not gonna happen. Americans are patriotic when they're winning. Germans on the other hand fanatically fight to the death against stronger opponents, and have done so since Hermann painted Teutoberg forest with roman blood.
The tendency to work well as part of a group is surely genetically influenced, and it would make sense for it to evolve in the central part of a continent in a population surrounded by other tribes on all sides.
