I'm gonna be jumping into the full marathon world this fall. Was wondering is there any way of knowing what i'm capable of without going out and trying to run 26.2 at race pace?
Been averaging 50mpw. 37/m

bump it up
Marathon prediction can be tricky, especially your first one. I have found running a half about 6 weeks out gives me a good idea of my capabilities but it's far from a foolproof. As it is your first marathon, it would be best to set a very reasonable goal and see if you can lift the pace in the last 4-5 miles.
The marathon is a race where experience is key. You should treat it as an experience that will benefit you in the future. It is a distance that deserves maximum respect and your first time goal should reflect that. Try to control your ego in your first one(the most important lesson I learned) or you will suffer like never before.
You need to do some Yasso 800s. Google that. It's a thing.
Long story short, you go to a track. You run 10 x 800 meter repeats. Whatever your average time is you just change the minutes to hours and the seconds to minutes. BAM! There's your marathon time prediction - works everytime.
Example: You go to a track. You run 10 x 800 meter repeats in an average time of 3 minutes, 2 seconds. BAM! You will run a 3 hour, 2 minute marathon.
Let's say you run the 800 meter repeats in an average of just 2:04 - hard workout, not many people can do it. But, if you can, oh man are you in shape for a great 'thon. Cause BAM! you're running 2:04 for your marathon debut.
Don't forget to Google it. Guy writes for Runners World. Not the Galloway guy, so no walking breaks.
Good luck!

Don't use these as a prediction^^^.
Yasso is a Vo2 max workout, the marathon is an aerobic event. Yasso's may work for some people but they are definitely not a good predictor for a first time marathon runner. The varibles are massively different. I am pretty sure David Rudisha could do 10x800 @ 2mins but do you think he could run a 2 hour flat marathon? There is speed based runners an distance based runners.
Don't listen to that other guy. Do some Yasso 800s. I have over 15 testimonials from runners of all speeds that were within 1 minute of their Yasso 800 predicted time. It's just too cool not to work!

Probably 15 out of 200. statistical manipulation at it's finest.
Hey man you need to step off with your statistics and your pseudoscience. VO max? Just run baby.
Why don't you go back to math class, Poindexter.

You forgot the question mark. You should definitely go back to English class. Imbecile.
It wasn't a question.
Next time it will be my fist.
Typical. Someone who can't produce a counterpoint and resorts to threats and personal insults. This is the only way I will get a fist on a computer . Peace ✌!!!

Can you really not tell that Bart is being disingenuous? It is called trolling. Anyways, it really is tricky to pick a pace for your first marathon. Here is my suggestion: Hopefully you know your 5k capability and HM capability. If not, find out. Calculate your pace per mile for each race. Create a fraction by using your 5k pace as your numerator and your HM pace as your denominator. This fraction should be equivalent to your HM pace divided by your goal marathon pace.
EXAMPLE: 5k in 18:36 (6:00 per = 360 seconds per mile), and HM 1:30:00 (6:49 per mile = 409 seconds per mile). 360/409 = .8802
409/.8802 ~ 465 seconds
465 seconds is 7:45. That would make your goal right around 3:23.
This is by no means foolproof and most likely underestimates your actual marathon capability. However, if you really have no clue what to shoot for, it will provide you with a very achievable goal.
Yes, I know what he is trying to do. It is a feeble attempt at trolling. What I meant by my post is that he could not offer a creative point to get me going. Instead, he resorted to the creatively stunted approach of insults and threats. A good troll can make a point that contains both imagination and bite statements.
A good troll will almost never be found out and leave people in a state of confusion. This guy is pathetic old letstun poster who shows no imagination, style or intelligence. He is the Kindergarten kid of trolling.
LOL - the butt hurt is dripping off your last post. Face it Netwerk Error, you got TROLLED!
P.S. Yasso 800s are a pretty good prediction tool.
I run a 1:27 flat half marry , and a mid 18 5k. Been averaging 50mpw.
Would love to qualify for Boston on my first attempt, run Boston, and be done w/ the marathons. That may be a long shot though. Any other help appreciated.
Based on your half and 5k times and 50mpw you have a good shot at qualifying. I think the key will be how you handle the long runs. Get in a few good quality 20-24 mile long runs at approx 1min mile slower than goal pace. Also mix in lots of goal pace runs. Try a couple 8-10 MGP runs mid week in the 10 weeks leading up to your taper and also add goal pace running to your weekly long runs. Try a 12-15 mile MGP run for your weekly long run about 4-6 weeks out and starting 12 weeks out do a few long runs of 16-20 miles with the last half averaging MGP or slightly faster. See McMillan or Pfitzinger materials for more info on how to run these. Good luck!
