I agree with this completely. Years ago, the West Germans did a long-term study and found that early specialization stunted an athlete's ultimate performance. They switched to play-type activities for the youngest kids, and had the somewhat older kids all do decathlon/heptathlon training (though they might specialize in the meets themselves). Kids only focused on one or two specialty events when they were well into their teens--and better adult performances resulted.
