You guys make good cases for taking Heath over Casey. I wasn't trying to start that debate. What I really had an issue with was the idea the Gags would choose a Nike athlete over a Brooks athlete because of the track club he runs for. That is what the title of the thread implies and what I was reading in the thread when I wrote my post yesterday.
But since some people wrote some well thought out, intelligent responses, I'll keep it going. Let's continue to assume that no promises were made, since that's not how it works.
First of all, Pat Casey is actually not 27. He was born in 1990. That means he just turned 24. He's been a little streaky over the years and his pr is not as fast. On the flip side, he's been with the OTC for less then a year and he's improved a lot in that time and he looked damn good at Oxy. No reason to believe that he was trying to peak for that race any more than Heath was. Every reason to believe he has some faster times in him this season and certainly in the next few years. Watching him the past few years I've never really thought he'd be someone with a serious shot at making teams and this spring I changed my mind.
G. Heath is 28 almost 29. He was born in 85. And he is a mile specialist. He has some badass times at longer stuff, but that's his event at USA's every year. I've thought he should move up for years. Dude's a horse. I probably shouldn't have said that his best times are behind him. I wouldn't be shocked if he does run the faster time this season but so what? Realistically, he won't get that much faster in the mile. He's far from washed up but he's also never made an outdoor team before and I don't think he will in the 1500.
Like I said yesterday, I really think Casey has more upside in the mile. This is world relays not the OG. It makes more sense to me to get Casey some experience and look to the future, rather than to nitpick about who has the faster pr. Might as well bring Webb if that's your logic huh? Gags thinks the same way apparently.
USATF is a chickenshit organization. They do some shady business and throw athletes under the bus. I don't think this is one of those times though. I do feel for Heath, but whining about relay team picks is not the way to challenge Nike. Why not wait until he beats Casey late season or runs a 3:32 and then say "Hey remember when you took him instead of me? Screw you guys." Honestly this response makes me feel for him less, not more.
