Let me start by saying I ran my first half marathon and it was great. I'm very proud of the fact that I finished and had a decent time. However, I feel my training should have allowed me to get a better time. A brief backstory before a couple of quick questions:
I trained for about 9 months and was running about 45-55 miles a week the last few months. I ran one speed workout a week and did one long run a week (with a rest week every 5th week). My long runs increased from 9 miles to 16 miles. For the last two months, my pace during the long runs/slow days was 7:35-7:45/mile and it was pretty easy and comfortable. My comfortably hard tempo runs of 6 miles were at 6:28/mile. My mile repeats were 5:50-6:00/mile. I tapered for 2 weeks at 70% mileage week one and due to a nasty stomach bug 6 days before the race, I only did about 15 miles the week of the race.
1. My half marathon time was 7:06/mile, The weather was perfect and I felt good, no excuses. According to many things I read, I should have been able to do 6:30/mile and that is what I started at. My first 6 miles were in 6:35 pace. Were my expectations way off?
2. Assuming my expectations were reasonable, what happened? I didn't feel like I had a lot left in the tank when I finished. Was my problem just a mental one?
Sorry for the moderately long post. Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions you have for me.
