How could someone argue El G was speed based?
Because he was really fast and set the 1500 and mile records. Still holds them too.
Thanks for your non-input.

He's already within a second of the 15...
Really!?
How is 3:27.72 within 1 sec of 3:26.00?
That represents about 13m difference. Kiprop won't get it unless he's on some new PED that isn't on the radar yet.

Well, the fact El.G. would get a team mate to act as a rabbit in championship races shows he didn't think of himself as being much of a 'speed' guy.

With no international engagement in 2014, Asbel Kiprop needs to go for the world record this year.
He can do it if he puts his mind to it. He is in superb form and the fact that about five other guys are on fire too lends it more possibility. They would push him all the way.
At least this is something we can ALL AGREE ON here on LET'S RUN.
I know you all agree with me.
I've assumed for a year or two that he was going for it this year or next. He will be 25 next month, so he's running out of time for his peak years.
Bring a couple of hand-picked "domestiques" like El Guerrouj did to Monaco and go get it.
It would be one for the ages if Kiprop ran 3:25 but Makhloufi nipped him at the line. Nobody would ever shut up about that. It would be argued about for decades.
He certainly has it in him. I think Asbel is a Noah Ngeny level talent making him better than Lagat was and should therefore threaten his Kenyan record which is just .34 off the WR.
I'd absolutely love to see him (or anyone) do it, but it would surprise me a lot to see him go all the way under 3:26.

you do cram somewhat a dis-service
in his 1'42.88 he ran ~ 5m+ extra wide in bends, so a route 1 run wouda been ~ 1'42.1/1'42.2 that day
& that was a tactical 800 on his part !!!
his mile wr was that of a likely 3'28-flat guy at even pace off a 3'46.3 mile with a ridiculous 53+ finish
yyy wrote:he will get it. Ventoline^3 can probably calculate a pretty accurate time using his grinder. where art thou, Ventoline^3?
i'm pretty sure he looked good for 1'42-mid in monaco but his 400 couda been anything between 46-high/47-low
giving him a prelim
47.0 / 1'42.5 ->2'11.6 , 3'26.7
his 1500 estimate looks fair value as race started off ridiculously quick, some wide bend running & he was alone from 500 out
he shouda gone for 1kwr last year as he had enough in hand even with sub-par pacing to get it
to get 1500wr he will need to have improved his form by at least 1s from last year to get some leeway for non-perfect pacing/etc
unless he has put some meat on his bones, i don't see it happening
( for his speed/endurance characteristics his 800 speed will need to get down to 1'42-flat !)
Farah will run a few 1500s this summer. He will improve his PR and could surprise the rest.

There is no way he gets either the 15 or mile record.....he is the best we have seen in a long time.....but he isn't El G. It's going to take someone more special than kiprop to get those records.
I'm going to have to agree with this guy...
I think he would rather get (or get close to) the 1500m WR than the mile record, because he's more speed based with 1:43 800m PB...in 3k or 5k he hasn't showed anything of relevance. In his Monaco run the first lap was of 53s! And he had to make it from a long way out.

those who think he can't should know that his 1200m split in Monaco was faser than El Guerrouj 3:26:00. With better pacing he is already in 3:26:xx pace. I believe he can do it this year.
Anyone else think David Rudisha should move up and see what he can do in the 1500/mile. If you can run a 1:40 800m... why not 151.5 twice? If he trained for it, I think he'd be strong contender for the new world record.
I have just realised that Kiprop will be competing at the World Relays in Bahamas this month. That said, that does not alter anything that much. He has enough time to make an assault on the world record.

I concur.
People said that Rudisha wouldn't break the WR. He did.
Then, they said that he wouldn't run under 1:41. He did.
Then, they said that he cannot run under 100 seconds. He most probably will prove them wrong.
Kiprop can break the WR in the next two years. They way he moved from the field in the last 50 metres was just too convincing. Great finish!
