Who are the people who are intolerant zealots? They tend to be highly religious people. Since the Bible says gays are evil, highly religious people will blindly believe that all gay people are evil and deserve the bigoted treatment they receive. The Bible also says that sex is bad. So highly religious people will look down upon people who have sex out of wedlock, even if they are consenting adults. The Bible, actually, the Bible doesn't say this - the Catholic church says that abortion is wrong, so highly religious people will oppose the right to choose and some zealots even turn to killing doctors, all in the name of the Lord. The Bible says that the Earth was created in 7 days, so highly religious people oppose evolution being taught in schools. Gambling is bad. Imbibing alcohol is bad. Birth control is bad.

hey curiosity-
have you read the Bible? not to be aggressive, or to brag, but i have read it twice, cover to cover. I am not a Bible Scholar, but do have a minor in Bible (30 units) to go along with my Bachelor's of Science degree.
you propose that the Bible says "gay people are evil, sex is bad, the earth was created in 7 days, gambling is bad, and imbibing alcohol is bad."
After reading the Bible, it does not say that gay people are evil. it does say that homosexuality is a sin. it also says that everyone is a sinner--regardless of their sin. in essence, in God's eyes murder, homosexuality, and dishonesty are equal.
Sex is not "bad"; Sex is created by God. sex out of wedlock is a sin, but the act of sexual intercourse between a husband and wife is not a sin.
the Bible says that the earth was created in 7 days. I agree. But, the hebrew word for days is "yom" meaning "day and age." in today's society one could use it this way, "Back in the day, i used to play soccer before i began my running career." that doesn't mean 1 particular day, but a time period. the bible does not say how long the "days" were, but i believe they were long long periods of time, possibly millions of years.
The bible does say that gambling is bad. Jesus spoke more about money than any other subject. did you know that? many do not. he taught about people with riches, and people without anything. he was friends with the poor and the rich. A follower of Christ will be a good steward of that which Christ has given him. gambling money away instead of saving/ investing is not being a good steward.
imbibing alcohol--getting drunk, is a sin. the bible says not to be filled with wine, but to be filled with the spirit. However, Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding. now, heavy consumption of alcohol will alter one's personality, and can cause someone to do things they would not do had they been sober.
hope this clears things up for you.
