The European Press is absolutely crapping themselves with joy over this Ryder Cup victory. BBC Sports has a very interesting article that chimes in along these same lines.
But, what I find very interesting about these Euro lovers who are Back slapping themselves six ways from Sunday is the omission of this observation: it might be a very good sign that American golfers .... not NFL football players, but golfers .... do not excel in teaming in golf.
For it reflects an attitude the Euro sweeties do NOT have: individual boot strap mentality. It is us, the USA, soup to nuts, that is responsible for the Euros not having to read Pravda every morning.
Maybe Phil and Tiger being teamed up early wasn't a good idea. Bottom line, that's not the big story. Over the last ten years, even including the anomoly at Brookline in 1999, the Euros have played to their "strength" .... four ball competitions which DRAMATICALLY reduces the pressure on an individual golfer.
That's what Europe is all about ... shifting the real pressure to the folks who can handle it: the Americans. Another way to say this is that there is a reason why Europeans so eagerly look forward to the Ryder Cup: defeat fatigue in stroke play competitions w/ Americans.
(I bet the Aussies and S. Africans could have a word or two to add about this...)
