I have clicking in my hip as well, along with occasional stiffness and soreness. Here's what my doc had to say about it:
1. I might have a labral tear, which could cause the clicking as the joint moves without the proper protection but if so, it's minor enough to not bother my running or daily life.
2. I NEED to strengthen my hips and glutes, or this will get worse. He referred me to PT, where I got started on a program of wall sits, leg raises, superman exercises, etc. to strengthen the middle of my body. The clicking is still present but the pain is mostly gone.
3. The clicking will likely remain for not only the rest of my running career, but maybe my whole life, unless surgically repaired. That's not worth it at all, to me. The key is to strengthen the areas so that whatever tissue degeneration has come about due to my weak hips can be stopped before it gets bad enough to stop me from running.
