A close mate of mine ran 2.40 off a routine of 4 or 5 10k runs plus a regular club race. He was running 16.00 for 5000m at the time. He ran 2.36 (and 15.40) when he cranked that up to 13k runs and the racing.
He stepped up to 16k days and ran 2.32. Later on he trained with a coach and did more structured training and higher volume, and also serious track sessions and ran 2.26 also 14.55 for 5000m.
He never broke 2.00 or 4.05 for 1500m.
