In recent years I feel that Americans have begun to figure out how to run fast from 800-10000m. We have medaled in the 800, 1500 and the 10000m. We have had four guys under 13:00 (not counting Lagat) and one even at 12:55. I do not believe that we are not running fast marathons because of talent. I believe that we aren't running fast marathons because our coaches don't know how to coach the marathon. We tend to train in small groups whereas Kenyans train in groups of up to 50 people even. How in the hell can Ritz do a hard 45K workout alone? In addition we are too cautious w our athletes in terms of mileage, workout intensity etc. Americans refuse to learn anything from what Canova does or how successful athletes train for the marathon. I just don't get it. I refuse to believe that it's talent. We have the talent and we are running better at all distances (including the half w Hall and Ritz) but when it comes to the marathon we are just not there. Neither Shumaker nor Salazar are good marathon coaches. I guess that Mahon has had the most success but I'm not sure that he's any good because he was only successful with Hall. All of this "Sports Gene" stuff is bs to me.
