Does anyone know of a cardiologist that understands
endurance athletes in the Chicago suburbs? My current
cardio thinks I need a pacemaker because of low heart
rate and an av block exceeding 3 sec causing my hr to
fall to 21 at a point during sleep. I passed an echo
stress test. Yeah, I'm old and slow but not ready
for a pacemaker if I can help it.
How long have you been marathoning and such? how many miles a week Just curious?
What brought you to the cardiologist in the first place? Is your bradycardia symptomatic? Do you know if you have 1st, 2nd (type 1 or 2), or 3rd degree block? How much are you running? All cardiologists should be well versed in criteria for needing a pacemaker, whether or not they have a large athlete patient population. They should also fully understand the effects of endurance exercise on heart rate and rhythm. My guess is that you are not fully understanding his reasoning or the pathology of what you have going on. Good luck, I hope you don't need one though!!

I've heard that Northwestern Memorial Hospital just started up a Sports Cardiology program geared to supporting the cardiovascular needs of athletes and runners.

I went to Jyothy Puthumana at Northwestern Memorial. He did a pretty in depth review after I had a sibling pass away due to a heart condition. He was very aware of the difference between an athlete's heart versus a layperson's heart.http://www.healthgrades.com/physician/dr-jyothy-puthumana-y2gl5

just curious if you were ever checked for Lyme disease. My friend was having same issue...Diagnosed with Lyme disease and ended up with a pacemaker at age 57. He was a 4:10 miler at age 45-49
