I just started my sophomore year of school (girl) and it is my first year of xc. i did indoor track last year but didn't get into it until outdoor, my mile pr is 5:43 from the end of that season and i ran a 5k but my endurance was not good and i ran 22:03. over the summer i ran around 40 mpw and did some challenging hilly runs. The coach had us do a mile time trial a week ago and she said we will use this time for workouts and eventually you will be close to this pace for a 5k (that's the first thing i wasn't sure about) i ran 6:01 but am now at 6:50 5k pace. The workout yesterday was 4x 800 (she cut it down from 6 to be "nice" , wasn't happy haha) at the mile trial pace. It was possible for me because i ran 3:02, 3:01, 2:58, 2:59 with 1 minute rests. 6 of those would have been hard but doable. Should we really be doing race-pace work this early in the season? bc i am a big fan of research and it seems like we should have done 8x 800 slower than race pace to build strength. Also, i am not buying in on being able to do a 5k at 6 min pace quite yet, i am hoping for 6:25 pace by the end of the season, is that reasonable? What are your thoughts on this coaching, and where do you think i would be for 2 miles and 5k now?
Thanks everyone!!
