I've known some of both, and I think the first option would be preferred if those are the only two choices. I took over a job > 20 years ago from a relatively young guy (45ish maybe?) who enjoyed some sort of unpowered flight. I can't recall what exact kind of contraption he used; I'm thinking hang glider, if that's still a thing, but I'm pretty sure that's not exactly it. Anyway, within a year of leaving the job I took over from him, he crashed the stupid thing into a mountain in France. I guess he was doing something he loved as he perished. That would not be my choice, mind you I'm relatively risk averse... :-)
I prefer something in the middle. I want to retire comfortably but have no real interest (or maybe better, realistic expectation) to retire rich. And I don't want to pass on until I've enjoyed that comfy retirement for a good chunk of time. I think I've earned it! :-D
