He did not compare African runners to dogs. The comment was stupid, not racist.

Yeah, but when Larry uses the expression "they're running Indian file," the immature un-pc kid inside of me has to laugh.
Yeah, that one sucked too.
I mean there used to be an old running game where you ran single file and the last person ran ahead and took the lead, and as son as they did the last person then ran up and took the lead etc.
But, wtf? I thought "he must have said 'single file.'"
sounds like a pretty good joke to me. don't think it's racist at all. not sure why he threw in the dog part though
He did not say dog
I heard something about a tree or log
So it was Dwight Stone that said it?
Well, not the way to discuss the issue, but he couldn't have mangled it so bad -- UNLESS HE KNOWS IT IS AN ISSUE.
I give him/whoever credit for knowing the sport at the NCAA level well enough to know that there is some bullsht going on with foreign athletes taking advantage of greedy USA coaches taking short cuts.
There have been many threads before debating this. If there was some equivalent in NCAA football, and some SEC school's thought it was unfair...rule changes would be made. Because track is such a bstard sport, the NCAA allows 21 year old freshmen from other countries, who have been training for many extra years...to take scholarships that could have gone to 18 year old USA kids and made a difference in their lives and made a difference in our athletes for Olympic development.
It sucks to like a sport where the governing body allows so many bad things to go on. --Like time to allow schools to offer more scholarships if they want to, the levels are ancient. yadda...
Obviously we are at the meet and not watching the stream.
Do we know who the announcer was? What's his or her name?
Is their an archive of it?

ESPN3 sometimes archives programs, so look for it.
Sounds like it was Dwight Stone...
Mixing metaphors.
But, GREAT, that some announcer knows the NCAA sport enough to know that is an issue.
On ESPN3 it should be available for replay.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the comment was somewhere around the 2nd quarter of the race. Or should I say the 2nd of the 4 legs of the race (ha ha).
Any credible announcer with today's awareness and transparency of everything said in the public venue knows there is no room for stupidity. Accountability and responsibility are expected not being cute or clever. Announcer should be pulled off the air and reprimanded.
He should be media trained prior to being put back on air again.
As far as africans running in the collegiate ranks , they have been competing for almost 40 years in the NCAA's. They raise the bar , they made/make us better runners as simple as it sounds.

Better at what? Did you see how slow that race was? Lalang didn't even push and when he had it in the bag he slowed down. They don't make us better, they come in an ruin the sport, they ruin it for the true collegians running, they ruin it for the spectators, and they ruin any hopes and dreams for a high school kid wishing to become an NCAA Champion. They discourage "making us better" and encourage us to accept defeat more easily.

The announcer was talking about going to the dog pound and picking up a dog and not knowing it's age. . . then cutting it's leg off to count the rings. . . wtf? He definitely compared him to a dog. What a horrible comment.
I hope there's some consequence. As far as announcing goes, we wouldn't be missing much if he was fired, he was pretty clueless.
Yep, the PETA people are going to be all over this one.
As a spectator, I disagree with the 'ruin it for the spectators' part. Maybe they ruin it for you, but I think the more talented the field, the better.
"they discourage making us better" ...so better competition is bad?
You also say that giving scholarships to people from other countries takes away scholarships from "real" scholar athletes (lol) from the US, who would have benefited from them. Sure - but those from other countries who receive these scholarships benefit also, arguably much more even. Do you care different amounts about human beings, depending on where they were born?
Isn't Larry Rawson that arrogant announcer who likes to call out splits in the Marathon by kilometers?
no more africans!!! wrote:

The race was slow because not one American born athlete had the BALLS to make it a fast race. Lalang is doubling, if those p*ssies want to run 5 minute pace why wouldn't he? You think the recent string of college guys running 13:20s would happen without fast Africans like Lalang and Chelanga before him? Do you care that a canadian came in and won NCAA championships taking them away the dreams of that high school kid too? Probably not because he was whiteish.
Your attitude ruins the sport.

He's perpetuating the stereotype that Africans are never honest about their age
Its a stereotype...because it happens with amazing frequency.
It is a fact that Africans do age-cheat, but to equate any Black athlete to an animal to make a negative point is uncalled for. Anyone who does not understand this, does not understand history. With that said, if he said Dog and actually meant to say Dog, I would definitely call that Racist, but I am going to assume he meant to say Log even if he actually said Dog, which is not Racist.
He DEFINITELY did not mean to say log. You guys have never heard this saying before?
He was talking about how when you adopt a dog, you sometimes have no idea how old it is, and jokingly said you "cut off its legs and count the rings". I don't think it was intentionally racist, just a really stupid thing to say. Comparing recruiting an athlete from Africa to adopting a dog from the pound is in questionable taste.
1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2: racial prejudice or discrimination
Sorry, this is not racism.
