Have you ever watched a distance race on TV?
Running is a contact sport.
It's an absurd idea that someone can just make you stay behind them for an entire race. If a guy could actually stay in front of faster runners using the tactic you describe, why didn't the guy do the same to the rest of the field? Why didn't he just sprint out ahead of the sub 10 minute guys and "not let them pass"?

You've never elbowed or pushed someone in a race? Maybe it's a British thing.

I find that posting to letsrun.com is a good way to practice dealing with obnoxious runners.
Hah!

You still haven't explained why you didn't just keep pushing the pace in order to get past him. If he is slower than you, then he would have not been able to keep it up. That is how you beat kickers. His way of running is how you beat non-kickers.
Agreed
If you're a kicker, go to the front and try to slow it down to control the pace. Or else just sit and kick.
If you aren't, go to the front and push the pace to burn off the kicker, or surge 2-3 laps out.
Is the OP for real? You just keep surging to go past the bloke.

You must have an impressive group of runners.
My goodness, are you serious?
Such tactics are part of the sport my friend. How many times you see runners get blocked out in a race?
If you are a fast runner, you might get blocked just to be slowed down, and no one go protesting about that.
A champion needs to survive both tactics and physical race.

Don't make me laugh old man, you need to peel your eyes when watching races.
Do you remember Galen blocking Kenenisa Bekele and elbowing him just before they went 1 2 with a team partner before the Olympics?

I was doing the 3200 today for the final meet of the season. And I was tailing one of the runners the entire race.
I was going for a PR, and he was going about 2.5 seconds per lap slower than I wanted to.
So I tried to pass him.
But when I did, he would just accelerate until I fell back behind him, then he would brake.
How do you deal with these types of runners? How should I next year?
Man this is a sissiest thread I have ever read, but if you are a lady, then no problem.
In one of your responses you said that you didn't want to go to the front. That ends the discussion, you just paid for the price of your choices.
Secondly, if you are racing for a PR, just stick to your PR pace no matter what. If someone passes you just go shoulder to shoulder with him at your pace if he accelerates keep the pace but at his shoulder. Never go behind him!

Looks you got lapped. Somehow the guys who lapped your opponent didn't have any trouble getting around.
Next time, streamline behind the guys passing you and work off THEIR speed for a little while.
I have to give the OP props. 6/10 You got quite a few of the regular stooges to respond
the OP immediately got downvoted to 2/10 after posting the link showing he was 20th getting double lapped in a HS race. this would have been very good if he did not admit that fact
You people are so predictable. If the OP had posted that he was the a**hole blocking someone from passing him (to keep 19th place no less) you'd be giving him all kinds of shit about how unfair and unsportsmanlike he was.
Personally, I think it's hilarious though. 12:51 and you're mad about one place. Haha

What an as shole you are. Yes, this kid seems a bit immature. But how does a 12:51 high school male get to LetsRun? He must actually be pretty invested in the sport. And he doesn't need to hear he's slow from everyone here; he probably spends all day everyday wishing he were faster. Remember guys: you generally don't like slow people because they don't care and don't want to train hard. But that's not true of everyone slower than you! Don't make stupid assumptions.
(Dealing with obnoxious runners?)
I'm wondering how you deal with obnoxious bikers?
Recently, I was on a long run and some doofus on a bike came up to me..."hey, I could use a break, do you mind if I ride along?" I'm thinking, REALLY? It's high 80's-I'm minding my OWN business and running to my music. And you're asking me for a break??? The guy proceeds to talk and ask several questions...meanwhile, he's on the side of me where he can see I am wearing a wedding band and YET insist on asking me silly questions. I finally told him, I need to go because my husband and daughter was waiting for me ahead....Seriously, how ignorant/obnoxious can he be? I was NOT impressed...
Sorry, I only looked at the title of your thread and thought it was something different....carry on.

Wow, a reasonable person on LetsRun. You're right, and despite not even saying anything I actually feel bad for the thoughts I had going through my head while reading this post. Good luck getting faster Caudex, and at this point don't even worry about 'racing' or any jerks that try to pull nonsense like that. I understand how ridiculous that guy was but it's just something you gotta deal with because there are pathetic kids like that out there. Do you plan to keep training after high school?
