just a fad like anything else. trying to have newton running instructors and newton natural runners...give me a break. it is a cult. everyone feels that they have to have them. lol especially the try geeks. not that I disagree with running with efficient form...but teach your muscles and feet to run the right way.
Newtons don't make you forefoot strike. They have a 3mm drop. I heelstrike in them fine, just like any other 4mm or zero drop shoe. They just have a very different forefoot cushioning system, and encourage you to land closer to your center of gravity.
I wouldn't call them a fad.
The durability of the shoe is amazing too. The forefoot cushioning in mine remained responsive for over 1000 miles. They encapsulate all the foam and membrane in rubber so that it doesn't bottom out. The lugs wear out over time but the cushioning is super durable.
