If I'm remembering correctly she wasn't a recruited runner. I don't believe she made All-scholastic (Globe) one time?
If she had a handful of top 'ships to chose from she still may have gone to Hanover,NH. But I doubt it.
I know a bit about Abbey D and Dartmouth. Abbey was recruited by the coach who was replaced by Mark Coogan. She didn't meet Coogan until she got to campus that fall. She wasn't a standout in High School so she probably didn't have that many schools after her. Dartmouth just lucked out, as they did with Alexis Pappas who wasn't recruited at all. Both got into Dartmouth based on Academics, but turned out to be perhaps the two best women runners to ever come out of the Ivy League.
I have been impressed with Coogan's coaching. Getting Abbey D. to a 2nd place finish this year at the NCAA XC could not have been easy. She was injured most of the season, so she could only cross train and had to sit out races.
Getting back to the topic...although I think Mary C. would well at Dartmouth, the chances are slim that she would go there...for one Ivy's don't even give athletic scholarships. I would say Oregon if running is her priority; if she wants a degree from a top tier school then Stanford. Oregon is an excellent school but it doesn't have the "name".
