their history shows they will probably get them in Jamaica when the time is right.
what a joke of a track team. 2 jumpers. 1 thrower. 0 sprinters
More scholarships for distance. It's how they have a larger xc team.
Sustained success generally brings all of the haters out of the woodwork. Just like Duke in basketball, Alabama in football, the Yankees, etc etc etc.

I am actually not trying to hate at all. I am just surprised to see a program that big doesn't have any sprinters.

It is true that a program that spends all of it scholarships on distance runners is going to have a deeper program. For instance, when Arkansas was winning everything in XC it was also winning everything in Track AND Field.
Oregon has the same issue, which is why it is harder for them to build up in cross country. Similarly for some of the other programs. Wisconsin does not finish in the top three of four in T&F too often (although they did win an Indoor title, almost the only Big Ten NCAA T&F title in a long time), but it is always pushing for the Big Ten title (which it won again in the spring).
Yes, it is a choice, but when evaluating how good a job a program does with its runners, you need to consider that OSU has a lot more raw material than most schools (is NAU similar?).
Sorry, wasn't replying to you. The comment was meant for the person with the Jamaica crack. I agree with you it is a bit surprising. It's my understanding that they are working to change that with the 2013 class. Looking at bringing in several elite 800-1500 guys, and then will work their way down to the sprints.
Dave Smith has talked pretty openly about the concentration on distance runners. This is all very much by design.
It's working out well for them. Three national championships in four years in cross country beats struggling to win the Big 12 Track and Field championship.
one guy "tyler payton" has a 100m time listed as 10.6 and 200 as 22.1 but also runs 800 in 1:52...
They shouldn't be allowed to use 3 sports' scholarships on one sport. They are really just a xc team and have an unfair advantage in xc. I understand why they do it, why be mediocre in 3 sports when you can dominate one, but it shouldn't be permitted in the rules.
How good are they really? They have 3x as much money invested in distance as almost any other team.
Assuming a school has the full 12.6(?) scholarship allotment available to the men's programs, the rule of thumb is ..
7 full rides for distance/cross country (1500 and up)
4 full rides for 200/400 guys
5.6 for everything else depending on coach's preferences.
Then hope and pray you can get a couple of football guys for 100/200, and there's your recipe for success.
But try not to waste a full ride on single event athletes like javelin throwers or pole vaulters. Only use full rides for athletes that can double and score well at championship events and/or distance guys that willingly train for whatever distance you need them, be it the 1500 or 10k or anything in between. And for the love of God, don't waste time or money trying to develop a decathlete unless you stumble across the second coming of Dan O'Brien.

I am torn here - it is easy to resent OK State's purchase of XC championships because they are nouveau riche, but does it change your view on the matter if I told you Colorado has hardly a track program? Like one decathlete, a thrower and a bunch of distance guys.
Sprinters have a difficult time meeting the rigorous academic standards of Oklahoma State resulting in their attending less prestigious schools.
They do have a track team!
OSU actually does have a couple of sprinters on the women's side and a couple of jumpers on both sides. Success is contagious, and now that they have a successful distance side, Dave is probably going to be able to raise the funding necessary for a full program.
We'll see if they can do better than Wetmore in track. Wouldn't take too much, obviously.
If you look for it, you can probably find the old interview with Dave Smith where he details how the AD at OKSt flat out told him that the university would not fund equipment or travel for a properly equipped and manned track and field team. IIRC, Smith essentially used a budget designated only for XC and spreads it across the three seasons.
This may have been true in the past, but isn't anymore. Okla State is in process of building a new multi million track facility that will open next summer. They also have one of the most accomplished 800 female runners in the country, and are in in some top kids in the 2013 class. Funding the track program certainly isn't an issue in Stillwater.

I'd bet this isn't exactly what you meant to say. If my abacus is working correctly, 7 + 4 + 5.6 =/= 12.6.
Having a couple of sprinters on the women's side is not as much of a deal because the women get a lot more than the men;s allocation of 12.6 scholarships.
