As a fan I find the NCAA cross country regular season to be too haphazard and uninteresting for the whole season to come down to a single championship meet that is poorly broadcast from a remote state park in the middle of the country. There has got to be a better way.
The thing that our sport misses is the meaningful build-up toward the championship that make other sports more interesting. Imagine if Wisconsin's loss at their home meet meant that they were out of contention for championship. I understand that from a training standpoint you'd like to focus on one day in November but I'd like to see the other meets count along the way.
My high school conference had an interesting format with two conference meets - one early and one late. The winners were determined by the combined performances at the two meets which built a lot of drama following the first meet that lasted throughout the fall. Could the NCAA use a format that made the entire season count at the expense of a single championship meet?
