Tell me what kind of runner you are, what strength training you have done, and what your mindset and philosophy is on strength training for running..
10k- marathon runner, only strength training I have done is plyometrics, I have also been involved with martial arts, other than that, a couple times a week I do basic ab routines and high rep/low weight routines for the upper body
I'm 5k to half marathon, female, and in complete base phase for the next 10 weeks or so (no races). I had a recent IT band injury that stopped me from running for three weeks and have never done plyos due to frequent metatarsal stress fractures. I could really use a good strength routine to put a stop to my injuries!
Fitness wise, I'm just under 18:00 for the 5k and was set up to run just under 1:21 for my half (before my IT band knocked me out). I'm very lean (5'7", 108 lbs) and have trouble building muscle, so true strength work is probably more of what I need than endurance work.

You don't want to build muscle; you want to get stronger. For that, I think the deadlift is the best exercise for runners. You can learn to do them yourself, but it's better to find someone competent to teach it.
