What happened to Dunham?
What happened to Dunham?
TERPS!!!!!!!! Fear the turtle, beeyatches!
I thought I heard those programs were getting the budget axe? Was that some other school Im thinking of?
Dunham was an awful coach who was bringing the program down, among other things. Glad that they got rid of him.
I think the track program raised enough money in donations to get a brief reprieve from getting killed.
From another thread on the topic:
The University of Maryland men's track and field was saved for one year, after enough funds were raised to meet the first stage of the the university's requirements for continuing the program.
Unfortunately, men's cross country and men's indoor track and field were offically cut effective July 1, after failing to meet the same goal.
Based on the the first round of fundraising under the plan, "men's track and field will compete with 14 student-athletes during the 2012-13 outdoor season.
A victory of sorts.

What thats not a victory at all.
Likely the men's track team will be cut too.
Whats ridiculous is Maryland could just take its Football players in the off season and have them do track just to stay in shape. Throws, some sprints. This wouldn't effect the gender balance. There's no reason not to have a track team at all. Just sort of says something poor about the school.
Agreed.
Its also bizarre though to be in such dire straits and be able to hire another coach??

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Maryalnd was to use football players as track athletes, the number of men's track athletes would still count against the Title IX equation, and the program would still need to be funded (coaches salaries, travel, meet expenses, etc.). Possible the limited men's track scholarships they have would be moot since the football players may already be on scholarship, not sure how that would work. So I don't see that this would solve anything.
