Olympic Sport (Anything at the Olympics with the addition of softball and baseball)
NCAA athletics is the major contributing factor to USA track and field advancement. Due to Title IX forcing equal numbers between men and women athletes as well as scholarships, all the men's Olympic sports miss out.
At a D1 university male Olympic sports get 85 less scholarships and as many as 100+ less roster spots than their female counter parts. This being because football gets 85 scholarships and over 100 roster spots that must be taken from male Olympic sports to equal out with women.
Sometimes you just get a situation where a male track team only gets 40 athletes and the women get as many as they want. But then sometimes you get schools with only women's track and no men's track.
It has been in the news how the USA women have been very good at this Olympics with far more medals than the men. But they leave out that at the college level, these men have far less opportunity then the women.
