Blocks were made mandotory after Allen Wells won the 1980 Olympics without using them. You have to use them so they can detect false starts.

nick goes 47x.
however if we see 46x then he's entered a new stratosphere.
and is good for a bet for show in the OG 8
Grade 3 Hamstring Strain. DNF. No Olympics. No Paris.

Agreed on this- although I'll take it to 45.7.
I cannot believe people predicting 47-48. That's what excellent milers do. Nick often splits :50 in his 800M's.
46.2
I'm going with 46-high, but no faster. And please, PLEASE don't pull a hammy in the process.
I'm guessing zero chance of him running 45-anything unless he can suddenly hit about 21-high/22-very low at the 200 mark, and I'd be shocked if he has that kind of acceleration and raw speed from a standstill (and even more true considering he's going to be very rusty at using blocks these days). He's supremely strong at the END of 800s when the competition struggles in, but he'd have to be supremely quick INITIALLY from the gun to run a 45 and that's so opposite of his regular style of running that I cannot see it happening.
On Twitter, he said he's not using blocks and predicts 46.XX
Twitter doesn't govern international track meets. He HAS to use blocks.
I was in Dublin one night but can't remember what happened. What is like this 400m overseas thing?
NO, he does not need to use blocks. Why does everyone assume that just because he's running a pro race he has to use blocks in it? That rule only applies to meets that aren't listed as exhibitions, in this case the race nick is in. For reference to you NOT having to use blocks in this situation, see Duane Solomon's recent 400m pr from about a month, month and a half ago. He didn't use them and neither will nick
Good that he's choosing not to use blocks. Better simulates the 800M start. IMO, racing a 400M is a great move.

I think he has to use blocks for the 400m.
I would be very surprised if he runs in the 45's. He's always been a strength type runner, so I bet he'll be high 46.
Wells DID use blocks in the 1980 Olympic 100m:
can anyone who actually knows the rules answer if he has to use blocks in a 400m race?
wait, what? wrote:
I can't tell if you're serious or not, but I've never heard of blocks being a mandatory element of any race, much less the 400.
You haven't heard of much, then, moron. They are.
He doesn't have to use blocks unless its an official event.
Symmonds has decent endurance for an 800 guy and has run 3:36.x this year. The people predicting 45.x are the ones who are ridiculous, that is more like what Charles Jock runs and he hasn't even broke 3:45 yet.
I expect something ilike ~47.4 but if he runs 46 mid then we should start looking for a medal at the olympics.

Berryhill & Stember both said they could probably run 47 during their primes. Also, Gabe used to hit 48 second during full-recovery 400M (link below). Also, most Olympic/WC 800M finalists, like Symmonds, can run 3:36.

I believe the 400 hurdler Georgeanne Moline (Arizona) did not use blocks at 2012 Pac 12 meet due to a strained hammy, or something....it was in the commentary.
