I don't see how this is so hard for you to get. Think about it this way.
In four years, Rupp is going for the 5000/10,000 double at trials. At this point, he has been to multiple Olympics and world championships and competed all over the circuit. He knows his way around a USATF nationals in his sleep. The 10 is his better event of the two; if anything, his best success has been in the half and full marathon distance. He is all about strength.
You are also doubling in the 5000/10,000, although your better of the two is definitely in the 5000. You are more speed-based; 3000 would actually be your best event. You are You are at your first Trials meet ever.
You place third in the 5000, and are told you are on the Olympic team. You take a victory lap, do a press conference...OK, you know the rest of the story: turns out it was a tie! Crazy! Later in the meet, you get trounced by Rupp in the 10,000. Now he's on the team. You're not.
USATF decides it would be a fun idea for you to have a run-off.
SOUND FAIR?
