Looking for a great, responsive lightweight trainer and it's down to these two.
Looking for a great, responsive lightweight trainer and it's down to these two.
I love the Boston 3s. They are light, but not too light, have a really narrow, fitting upper, and is firm and responsive. The 890v2s are softer, maybe a little more there, and I say fit more like a standard trainer. I almost got the 890v2s as my standard trainer (even though its a little lighter) because it was soft. I got the adidas glide 4 instead. The bostons I use for longer tempos.
I say Bostons.
Thanks for the info ~ what do you think of the Glide 4? I was thinking of getting that shoe for easy recovery runs.
I've heard it's really soft, which for me would not be good. Also, I've heard the ankle collar is high? Thanks again.
890V2 - Superior upper, as long as you don't have a very high volume foot.
I like the narrow upper in the Boston 3. I have one of each and the Boston gets much more time. To me, the 890 does not fit my foot well, at all.
I just got the Boston 3's. Haven't run in them yet except for in the store.
I had tried on the 890 v2's but they have a really low toe box. Like scrapes the top of you toes low. For that reason I didn't get them. And I by no means have a high volume foot. If anything it's below average volume.
The Boston 3's fit pretty good. Narrowish in the heel and midfoot, but not constricting. This was actually a good fit for me. Toe box was fine for me.
Shoefitr said I should size a half size up, but my normal size fit fine. Maybe every so slightly small on my right foot (which is slightly longer than my left) but not so small that it will be a nuisance.
Can't tell you much on the ride yet, but it will definitely be firmer than the 890 v2.
MagnumRunner ~ Let me know how you like the Boston 3s after a few runs. Thanks.
Don't know if you bought any shoes yet, but I went for my first run in the Boston 3's today.
3 mile run, probably around 7 minute pace or a little faster. (just getting back off break from track season)
I really love these shoes. Felt great right out of the box.
Fit: They fit somewhere in between a racing flat and a traditional trainer. Nice close fit on the heel and midfoot, although it's NOT noticeably narrow by the balls of the foot. Maybe a little narrow at the end of the toe box, but then again, I have long toes (2nd toe longer than big toe) so it fits my foot narrower there than most. The upper is light, nice for hot weather. Toe box has been described as low, but I didn't find it nearly as low as the 890 v2 and it's a little bit looser (but not so loose as to be troublesome)
Feel: These shoes have been described as firm. For a trainer, they are on the firm side, but I definitely don't think they are brick by any means. For me they felt perfect. I ran on the road and they felt protective/cushioned enough that I plan on using them for 10+ mile runs later in June. I would like to get a racing flat for some tempo runs, but I definitely wouldn't mind using these for longer tempos. Don't expect a cushy shoe, but they definitely give you enough protection if you prefer a performance trainer type of shoe.
The Bostons are light enough and low enough (lower than most traditional trainers, but obviously not racing flat low) that you won't feel much difference between a 12mm drop and an 8mm drop. I just came from the Ghost 2, which is a touch higher on the stack height and supposedly has the same 12mm heel toe drop, but the Bostons definitely feel lower. I'm a light heel striker, almost midfoot, and they work perfect.
They were flexible enough for a new shoe. Don't see in problems in that department.
Weight is great. I like a light shoe, but if it was too much lighter I actually would be worried. I think it's perfect for an everyday trainer if you can handle a shoe on the lighter side and a bit firmer.
I've heard some comments to size a half size up. I went with normal size and was fine. I would only prefer slightly more room on my right foot, but not enough to justify a size up. If you are usually right between 2 sizes, you might be safer with the larger size. Or if you have a higher volume foot (mine is a little lower volume than average) then you might consider a half size up. Shoefitr exaggerates the smallness for the Boston 3, so keep that in mind if you are using that.
I haven't ran in the 890 v2. It seems like a really good shoe. Softer than the Boston, but probably not as mushy as something like the Launch (which I have only tried on and have heard comments on). If you don't mind a low toe box, the 890 v2 would be a good choice as well. I would just consider the toe box and how much firmness you want. Other than that the weights are relatively similar and the stack heights aren't terribly different.
