How in the hell can the #8 seed LA Kings be the new favorite to win the Stanley Cup? What is going on in hockey. Someone who knows hockey, please respond.

who care but Cam Levins
They are not your traditional 8 seed -- it's a team that's loaded in goal (Quick), defense (Doughty, Voynov) and offense (Brown, Carter, Richards, Kopitar). They also have Brown playing the best hockey of his life. The 8 is due to an unfortunate last 3 games -- they had the 3rd seed with a week to go in the season.
I don't agree with people proclaiming them as the favorites for shock value -- I would view either NYR or NJD as a clear favorite in the final.
Defense wins championships. And while it's very hard for all of us in the LA area who remember the Kings "defense" through the years, they seem to have the edge in the category.
Of course they're going to win the cup. Half of their team has players from my favorite team (Flyers). It's a funny world we live in.
With Quick it is easily possible. That dude is awesome. They straight dominated the Coyotes last night.
This is part of what makes hockey so great. It's not like the NBA, where only 3 or 4 teams have an actual shot at the title. A few years ago (2006 or 2007), Edmonton (as an 8 seed) made an improbable run to the Stanley Cup Finals, pushing it to 7. The whole city and nation was behind them. I still get chills when I watch a video of their fans singing the Canadian national anthem for the SC Finals Gm 6:

But yes, the Kings are going to win. Half of what you need to succeed in the NHL playoffs is a hot goalie, and Quick isn't going to be stopped. He should be the USA's starting goalie in 2014 when we take the Gold from Cindy Crosby and our passive-aggressive Canadian friends.
There are these guys called the New York Rangers
I don't care who wins as long it is not the New York Rangers....

Compared to Vancouver and St. Louis, which the Kings have already dispatched with ease?
It's going to be an LA/ Devils final with Nj taking home another Cup.
It's hockey.
Anyone that gets into the playoffs has an equal chance of winning the Cup.
Home ice advantage is meaningless.
And the style changes completely in the playoffs.
In the first round of the East, the 5, 6 and 7 seeds beat the 4, 3 and 2 seeds. And of course the #8 seed beat the #1 seed in the West.
So, exactly half of the underdogs won.
If NJ manages to get past NYR, the finals will be one of the most embarassing, lopsided championship contests of any sport in a long time haha.
