I didn't run organized races until I was a freshman in high school (middle school didn't have CC or track teams, and I ran my first road race the summer before freshman year), so I don't know how much progress to expect from kids in 5, 6, 7, 8th grade to the high school level.
Here's why I ask:
I coach a summer track program for grades (entering) 4-7. There are some stars in there, and sometimes the parents ask me what X time might turn into come high school. I always tell them you can't really know, because a little physical maturity affects everyone differently, and then the kid's interest plays a huge part too. I'll probably always say that, but...
...just for my own curiosity, got any info on progress you made from as early as 4th grade all the way to 8th grade (as the beginning point) and then on through high school and beyond?
I've been working with this program for several years now, and I've seen one kid run the 400 in 67 seconds as a 6th grader, watched him progress to 55 seconds in middle school, and then as a freshman this past spring he got down to 51.9.
This year we've got a couple girls running the 800 in 2:50 and one girl running the 400 in 70 seconds. It's always those parents who ask me what may come down the road.
Thanks in advance.
