We aren't talking about the average MMA guys, just like we aren't talking about the average boxing guys.
Since you're a fan of both, tell me, how would Mike Tyson's boxing stance change in an MMA fight? Would he not have to widen his base a little bit, to increase his takedown defense, which would also take away some of his power? A guy who relies solely, and only on his punching power would lose a lot of power when he is worried about the takedown. I know you said you're a fan but have you ever trained, or are you just speaking from what you see on your couch?
I recognize Tyson hits very hard but he doesn't land with as much psi as a headkick, courtesy of a top kick boxer. Heck, make it a standup only fight and let me know how Tyson, who is 5'10" gets in range to land anything on 6'11.5 Semmy Schilt.
Did you not see Ray Mercer get destroyed in his K1 fights? Tell me one top MMA fighter who has world class stand-up without any wrestling or jiu-jitsu. You mention that boxers have perfected their art since they were little...the new breed of MMA fighters are showing that wrestling is mandatory, and they are doing that since they are young as well. And the great thing about wrestling is that it decides where the fight goes.
If we want to go old school and have style vs. style (before MMA evolved and showed you CAN'T be one-dimensional), Aleksandr Karelin would dump Tyson on his head within 10 seconds.
Well, since this debate is about Mike Tyson, who is a fan off MMA, let's hear his opinion on it...
"Tyson also believes a boxer could thrive in MMA with the proper training. He thinks a boxer’s mental attitude and conditioning would be just as important as his martial arts skills in conquering the cage.
“I know 100 percent that a boxer (could win),” Tyson said. “As long as he learns how to grapple and wrestle, he could do great. You’ve got to go in there respecting the sport, and not just thinking you’re going to knock somebody out every time. It’s a complicated sport, but a good boxer has to be a great athlete anyway.”
Hmm... so Tyson (the guy we are talking about) says that a boxer can be successful IF they learn how to grapple and wrestle. Since we are talking about Tyson coming in with just a boxing background, I think the case is closed.
