I'll look into Durkee...his name didn't come up in any of the 'research' I did. Garrison was 2nd at FL his senior year...being a 2x qualifier as well as a two time state champ is tough to beat..

To one of the above posters, I got the impression that the original thread was focused on XC runners, so I had not spent as much time considering Burlson.
To the OP, I had remembered Garrison as well, but in putting together my list forgot about him (your attention span sure shortens as you...).
Oh yeah, I loved your reference to:
"Steve Prefontaine(Mashfield) If you want to know anything about this guy go to
www.philnightmakesmoneyoffmestill.com
"
I will have to visit that site soon.
Ha, yeah, I just tried throwing out the list as quickly as possible after doing the research.
Don't be too upset if the link doesn't work...;)
I think Phill is on to me.
And correct, this list was focused on XC....3k's and 3200's came into play a bit, but overall it was about the best true distance runners (not mid distance). Thanks for actually taking the time to notice this.
Come on, how in the hell can you leave Chapa and Salazar off the list? Can you please tell me that?
Check the all time xc state champions and look how long Durkee held the record. Look who he beat in the race...
Osaa website should have info...
C and S did not run high school in Oregon. Read the thread title or learn your history.
Art Bouileau (sp?), a Canadian, ran his high school years at Lincoln High in Portland, went on to U of O and some fame.
Brad Hudson moved from NJ before he finished high school and went to South Eugene HS. I know he ran 2:17 for the marathon while he was in his teens. I am not sure if he was still in high school or what he actually ran for South Eugene, but it earned him a full ride to U of O.
Hudson is on the list...some of you should read the very first post I make.
So he beat Garrison when Garrison was a junior...sick time, but how was it the record when billy had run sub 15? Were the first few 5k years not held at Lane?
Durkee never made Kinney...unless I am mistaken? Winning state one time without having made nationals doesn't get you the list imo. Maybe he should be on the 2nd team....but I definitely would have him behind Jesperson..
I don't think Durkee ran any national race qualifiers. He hade the fastest state meet time for the lane course for nearly 20 years besting most of the guys on it list. He was as good or better than Dub Myers and Tracy garrison that year. He is at least 2nd team all time.
What about the Lamm brothers for honorable mention. From Sandy HS One ran 800 meters, can't remember all the details. They were from the late 70's

What are you talking about? Both Chapa and Salazar ran at UO. Not sure who's nuts here, but it ain't me.

Too bad he didn't use the full ride to get a degree. That scholarship would have been better spent on a runner who understood and respected its value.
What about Ted Miller? Probably class of 1981(?) Portland,OR
Tracy Garrison,Klamath Union
What a runner!!! I competed at the same time. He was outstading as a soph. His time would have won the AAA CC race by 2 sec. ( worst Muddy slop hole I have ever seen in CC. I ran 1:15 over my PR and felt I ran a great race. He competed AA that fall then moved up to AAA in the spring. Three time 3000m champ. He beat Matt McGuirk in the 3000m race who was outstanding runner as well

are you talking about the clown college dropout rupp?
Jim Grelle. 3:55 miler.
Mariel Ettinger. Took 2nd at FL; was junior internationalist.
Caroline Walker. WR holder in marathon when junior in high school.
Bobbie Gibb. First woman to run Boston.

Dellinger @ #1?? Come on people, get real.
Durkee was good but not at garrisons level. He was a year older than Garirison (Sr vs Jr), when he beat him at state , but as Garrison got 9th at foot locker that yr as a junior I would still give xc to garrison that year. .Garrison also and had the fastest time of anyone as a soph the year before when he was in 3A. As mentioned Garrison was 2nd at foot locker his senior year. Not to mention track..

What about Robert Durkee from Putnam in the early to mid 80's? Held the state XC course record for a long time, I believe beat Garrison to do it...If Garrison is on the list, Durkee should be too.

I think that was about the only time he beat garrison. As I posted before he w a year ahead of him. And garrison double gold at state 1500/3k as a jr, I think Durkee was 3rd in 1500.
Durkee had a great run that year , but that was about it. Not top all time material with no foot locker and no track titles
Tracy Garrison won 7 state championships between cross country and track and finished 9th a t Kinney his junior year and 2nd at Kinney (now Footlocker) nationals his senior year. He also won Golden West in 8:21 and his state meet record set as a sophomore of 8:21 stood for 18 years. As a junior he ran in the collegiate 10k at the Gerry Franklin invitational at finished 10th in 30:40. He would have been U of Oregon's 4th finisher. ian Dobson couldn't even break his school record in the 3000m. Matt McGuirk as honorable mention? He was tough as nails and always in the top 3.
And the guy that beat him in xc state his junior year didn't got 90th at the Kinney regionals....didn't even qualify for nationals. Garrison beat him by over a minute in the regional race.
