I thought I had read that Roche, knowing he would test positive, arranged for his mechanic to take a drug test for him. Problem was, his "mechanic", being a serious biker himself, was also dirty.
Hadn't heard that myself, but an Italian investigation into Francesca Conconi, the physiologist/doping godfather who trained and taught his two doping 'sons' Michele Ferrari and Luigi Cecchini (who have doped the pelethon for the last decade or so), found "unequivocal evidence" which was presented in Italian court that Stephen Roche used EPO in 1993. The guy is a fraud, and it sickens me to see him on the tour de france coverage on eurosport, still being paraded around as a legend, and being consistently named among Ireland's greatest sportspeople.
Roche didn't use EPO in 87 though did he. That was the year he won the Giro, the Tour and the World road race Championship.
Roche was as worthy a winner as most, he was in great shape that year. In other years he was too fat, and he was always in conflict with management and other ambitious team mates.

If you don't think Ullrich was on EPO or was blood doping then you are living in a dream world. His DNA was matched to blood bags captured in the Spanish raid. He has more evidence against him than Armstrong.
Haha don't worry, I'm under no illusions about Jan. But he was the man, blood doping or not. Always showing up to training camp 15 pounds overweight with two new DUIs on his record. The guy had more natural talent and ability than anyone else in the sport in the late 90s, and he squandered it on partying.
Lemond.
And while we're at it what's the evidence against Indurain? I haven't read any.

From 1987 on he was associated with Francesco Conconi.... read previous posts. Never caught redhanded but.....
look up the winner in '53 or thereabout.
LeMond is a real piece of work. He bad mouths everyone else as dopers, but we're all supposed to believe that LeMond gets shot in the chest with a shotgun, with some shot still in his heart lining, then comes back to win the Tour in the next year?? He's a disgrace...
I would say last clean TdF winner was Charly Gaul, 1958, but it's just bs speculation...

Was that even English?
The above is not only in English but it is the best utilization of the language in this thread, which of course is faint praise indeed.

Try again. Lemond missed the TdF in 1987 and 1988. You're a dumbass...
jacques anquetil spoke very openly about how he needed PED's to finish, let alone race the TdF.He was the first to win five TdF titles (i think his first was '57 or'58). i would say anyone post WW2 was dirty as i remember reading an article back in the '80's about how many elite athletes used WW2 drugs (designed for super soldiers) to enhance their athletic performances. MDMA (ecstasy) was a major drug used in WW@ as was amphetamines and cocaine. the sport is tainted from the very early days of looking for an edge so i doubt there is ever a winner without suspicion. it's an unfortunate reality for the sport of grand tour cycling.

I struggle to believe Roche wasn't doping in 1987, when he achieved his 'miracle' year, if he had the lack of morals to dope in 1993, when he wasn't exactly under financial strain given his accumulated success and wealth, we can rest assured he was at it in 1987 too. It's like Linford Christie or Mary Slaney, Jan Ulrich or Rashid Ramzi, when we see they doped later on in their careers we can very reasonably assume all their major achievements were also juiced.
I never said Roche wasn't doping in 87, I said he didn't use EPO then.
Doping in cycling extends back before the beginning of the Tour. Strychnine, Cocaine, and ether were early preformance enhancers.
Have there been any clean winners? Impossible to say. To try to pick out who the clean winners were by some sort of chronological progression is a fool's errand.
Stephen roche didnt use epo. There is no proof. He never failed a drug test.
It was kelly who swapped his sample with the mechanic.
There is trial to Conconi in which it was shown that Roche used EPO. If you can read it, I can point out documents in Italian.
Last clean winner is probably Vincenzo Nibali, who at least isn't a heavy doper. Going back in the past plausible clean athletes are Sastre, LeMond, Bahamontes and Bartali after WWII
What about Cadel Evans?
I believe Chris frome Bradley Wiggins and grey lemons were clean - also anyone who rode before PEDs were banned is by definition clean insofar as they weren't breaking any rules.
