Northwood is a pretty solid school, and coming from the area I see they have a good runner every once and a while. I knew the coach they had around 03/04 and one of the football coaches at the same time. I think they both liked their jobs. For a while Northwood had some decent mid-distance guys (especially for D2). The biggest draw to the school is the fact that it is EXPENSIVE (~$30k a year for a "public" university) and athletes can get a break on tuition; however, the school prides itself on placing people directly into jobs and, and they have a lot of internship opportunities too. That will be the draw for recruits; getting into a school that would have been previously inaccessible.
It is hard to be competitive in the GLIAC with GVSU in the same league. It might be hard to recruit in the area given that kids are pulled to CMU/EMU and then any really talented kids go to UM/MSU. If you get some talented guys in Northwood you have plenty of good competition for them within state. Indoor meets at GVSU/CMU/UM can all provide quality racing, and then outdoor there is always the Hillsdale meet that pulls some fast people from across the Midwest.
Best of luck to you in the application process my man. I think it would be a really solid position of you can get it. Make sure you get to know a lot of the other Michigan coaches as there are some really quality people in state that will gladly help you out. Also, be sure to get to know Jed, the Dow HS coach. He is a good guy who knows his stuff, will give it to you straight, and he is always willing to help. He is a true steward of the running community in mid-Michigan.
