Agree,
Though I did run for Gtwn a long time ago and have to admit that the recent results are at least puzzling if not somewhat disappointing. I have met Henner, but don't realy know him enough to have any kind of educated opinion about him or the cuurent state or prospects for the program. The answer regarding whether he, the athletes, the school, bad luck, or something else is responsible for the less than stellar(though not terrible results) wasn,t really obvious to me.
I ran for Coach Henner and I stand by my post. The coaching situation WILL have to change if the university wishes to keep funding this program-plain and simple. I'm not the first former Hoya to elicit concern for the obvious disrespect that Patrick Henner dispels upon his athletes-his arrogance will soon come full circle-something has to give.
Sad truth: Athletes, runners particularly, work hard in their sport. Enduring and persevering is the very nature of sport. It takes a WHOLE HELL OF A LOT for an athlete to quit (emotionally, mentally), transfer (emotionally, mentally, financially). Yet, Henner's track record (so to speak) is ALARMING: more than 60% of his first class as head coach has either quit or transferred (exact number of QUALITY athletes is hard to place (even as a former hoya)).
*For the record: Alex Bean should have been Henner's FINAL ticket OUT THE DOOR
Having run for Coach Henner for 5 years there are some things that should be said here. The philosophy he has always preached has been one of fundamentals and competitiveness. Previous posts have mentioned a strict following of a race-plan preventing true "racing", but any race plan I received focused on getting you to "where the race started" and beating people. The focus of the race plan was to actually put yourself in a position to be competitive. Whether former runners missed the point is another issue altogether.
As for the environment, I say great for Henner for making his runners accountable. With men between 18-23 years old getting ready for the real world, being treated like an adult part of the game. Most of these athletes are going to have other jobs and being prepared for the real world is very important. There were certainly times in my career which I struggled and the system in tact leaves the ball in the runners court. Coach Henner's door is ALWAYS open and through a solid three years of struggles I never felt like I was given up on. This is not to say there wasn't disappointment on both of our parts when potential wasn't met, but potential without expectations or accountability is a cop out. I'm glad at least one coach is showing his athletes to set goals and expectations for themselves both on and off the track.
Wait, so did Alex Bean really get kicked off in his 5th year? And for what, posting he was going to a concert? If so, that's just what i am about. After 4 years of dedication to the program, you can't just kick a guy off like all of it meant nothing. Bean's just the typeof guy you need on a team to create a more positive team atmosphere.
Disappointed to hear this. Not a great way to create supportive alumni by kicking them off right before they graduate.
I'm still not saying henner is a bad guy. A lot of his philosophies are defendable and he knows the technical side of running. Some of his decisions just seem off. It's just too bad he has to have falling outs with a lot of his athletes. Just creates a bad vibe
Another terrible outing by the Georgetown men at NCAA regional, Springer for example. What does it take for the Georgetown AD to get the message re: Henner.
Good comment regarding making the runners accountable, at least as much as you can make them accountable in a college environment. However; when is Henner himself going to be held accountable for the teams consistent shortcomings at the national meets.
Henner is one of the worst coaches i have ever seen. He doesnt know how to talk to his athletes when they dont perform the way he expect them to without profanity and thus completely destroys their confidence. Henner is 100% of whts wrong with Georgetown athletics and as a former athlete of Georgetown i know what im talking about. He can coach 5k and 10k guys but below that he does not know what a combination of strength and speed is. His athletes rarely get any better from high school and you can check the facts of that. Check Andrew Springer, Ayalew Taye, Theon O'Connor just to name a few excellent runners out of high school that he has done nothing with. This man needs to go and go now.
What about assistant coach banks? Heard some positives about him and he is having more of an influence now with regards to training, recruiting etc.. They keep getting good recruiting classes and looks very promising again this year
