call me an asshole, but what exactly is loss of coordination in one leg? I mean- running is simply really. When Josh needs to push the pace one of his legs drags and goes numb like a stroke victim? Is he unable to race fast because high speeds hurt one leg and he has to stay at a cruise pace? What exactly happens? I've no idea what he is talking about at all. Either way, blabbing about it on the internet and that runnerspace/flotrack video made him a cancer to running sponsors. they don;t want to hear that shit. Just run, baby.
Is this a troll attempt? Heaven forbid if this ever happens to you, or you have a serious enough injury that prevents you ever running again-- I will have no sympathy for you. I had this this year, and it turned out to be a rare hernia pinching a major nerve down my leg. I had to see a specialist to get it diagnosed (imaging wasn't useful), and they didn't fully know what was going on until they cut me open. That's a risk you take, hoping surgery is worthwhile in finding the 'problem' and fixing it so you can get back to doing what you love. I couldn't sustain a pace beyond marathon pace-- basically, using the hip flexors more would cause the muscles/hernia to pinch the nerve more, and I'd "lose control" of my leg and the power/strength in it. I loss muscle mass and coordination in my leg. I took 7 weeks off for surgery and 4 months of PT (plus a few other months of various treatments). I am back running and racing now at the same level as before, and it is the best feeling in the world to run normal again. If it wasn't for my aggressiveness with doctors and doing lots of research on what I was experiencing, my modest 6-8 months of hell could have turned into a few years of hell (like Nate and Josh). I certainly hope Josh can get to the root cause of his problem and get it fixed, once and for all.
You pretty much called it. I had problems with that in my early forties.
josh mcdougal comeback. please. Lets run will sponser you... we will get a bunch of peopleto sponser you. some companys gotta be willing to take a risk/....

How can you not root for Mcdougal?
He's basically the anti Rupp. Goes to some school totally not known for running, churns out 130 miles a week and beats everyone.

Think Star Wars
Josh's success was like, A New Hope - someone to challenge the Nike machine
Then came the injuries and setbacks, along with the rise of Rupp and the Salazar regime - Rupp Strikes Back
This is not the end, we will see his return, the - Return of the McDougal
Yeah that was cheezy :P
That was awesome.

Thanks
I have the same problem, it is real and it sucks. It first began happeneing in 1979, still a problem today, never got it diagnosed correctly, had two facial release surgeries which didn't work, they never figured it out and at this age it's too late.
I ran 48:24 for 10 miles at age 22, was able to run 29:30 for 10k basically on one leg just after turning 24, but never was able to race up to my abilities, very frustrating.
I know the frustration that Josh is going through, and I was no where near as talented as he is. Hope he can get it corrected, if there is a correction possible.
You guys are idiots, he did not go to Liberty because its the anit Oregon and he wanted to help the little guy school out. This is not the TCU football story either.
Josh went to Liberty because of his religious beliefs, end of story. Oh and speaking of religion while Galen may not be as super conservitive as Josh, he is pretty darn religious himself, so Josh is certainly not the anti-Rupp either.
He is absolutely the anti-Rupp.
I like both, but they are two totally different runners which makes the rivalry interesting.
Rupp - Goes to the school with the richest history of running. Has a word class, private coach since high school. Uses the most sophisticated running tools. Regimented and planned out training.
Mcdougal - Goes to school with no running history. High mileage runner that puts in 130 miles a week in singles at 6 minute pace.
or maybe it's a nike conspiracy to eliminate one of rupp's biggest rivals. well done, nike. well played. get him to sign for nike then confuse him with all of their dang ol confangled contraptions. i hear they're already talking to chelanga too. yep
I think it was more likely that his injury was from running mega miles in singles. Wasn't all his running in singles? I don't know his exact mileage but I imagine that 120+ miles per week in singles could do more harm than good, at least at the pace he was running.

Sure.
I hope Josh ignores any critics or detractors and can return to the high mileage and fast times. Go Josh.

That's what I think too. If he ever gets back, let's hope he doesn't try that again. Even Lydiard's guys topped out at 100 in singles, and it was more like ten hours in singles. Right around 120 quality miles seems the breaking point for so many elite athletes, and I don't understand why anyone would attempt them in less than 10 or 11 runs.
i dont know much about the whole leg coordination thing, but aside from the speculations that it was caused by the high mileage in singles, are there any other possible causes?
Genetics?
freak random development (like compartment syndrome)
anything?
Aside from Jenkins and McDougal I havent heard or read a lot about this, so I am just wondering where it may come from and if there are anyways to potentially avoid it?
i got the "loss of coordination" issue from constantly running on one side of cambered roads. As stupid as it sounds, I became so used to running on the left side that anything on the flat felt abnormal and after 1-2 miles, my leg would simply shut down. I tried to remedy it w/ lots of glute exercises, squats, lower back exercises, trail running, hill running and leg weights. Still hasn't gone away. 1.5 years I've have had to deal w/ this issue. Trails, hills and soft surfaces help to mask the issue quite a bit but get back on a road and I'm screwed. Really hard to describe to people because it's not an injury that "hurts." your left or right leg simply falls asleep. I feel it's definitely a neuromuscular issue.
i thought i strained my hammy 6months ago. but this damn thing wont go away. now im having achilles problems bc its getting over worked trying to make up for my hammy. does this sound about like the neuromuscular thing?
