Jon Warren (Rice) was a "good" NCAA runner. He made NCAA cross championships as a freshman and ran a low 4:00 mile and low 8:00 3000.
maybe it's been said before, but seriously, this is your homework, you need to do the work. the internet has made it easier than ever to get this done.
go to each region's website, find the schools, look at the coach and check his times/ honors. you could have it completed in an afternoon. I did somethign similar for pac 10/ west region 2 years ago and it took me 90 minutes.
People, look at all these coaches you are naming who were "good" NCAA runners but are not producing as coaches!! Just because it worked for you as an athlete doesn't mean it will work for all of the individuals you will coach down the line. That is why most of the really good coaches in D-1 were not THAT successful or superstars in college. They actually learned to coach through coaching, not from being a talented athlete.
Mark Carroll was a great athlete, but i heard he is a terrible coach!! i think someone can come up with a great research paper about his great running career and a poor coach!!

no one has mentioned Mark Carroll from Auburn. Irish record holder, 2 time olympian, multiple all american (maybe with a national title thrown in there for good measure)....13:03 guy at a pro...
For sure i would like to write about his great achievement as an athlete, and his failure in coaching!!His former coach should give him some hints about coaching because he will never make it by himself. Auburn is done!!!!!!

Great athlete and a poor coach = worst paper! unless you wonna fail big time!
When I mentioned Coach Berryhill was a "fair country runner" I was being understated. Bryan was a great middle distance runner who could also tear it up in cross country.
Carroll had four guys at outdoor nationals last year. His team PR'd so how do you come to this idiotic conclusion??????
They were so bad in XC, he didn't bring a men's or women's team to Regionals. This is only a year after having made Nationals. His good individuals were already there and good before he arrived. Must be rough having to 'come down' and relate to kids who aren't at the same talent and commitment level as him. He was given a high profile job with no college coaching experience. He'd probably be a better pro coach than college coach (what he did previously, very briefly).
