What should my half marathon time be in order to have a likely shot of running a 3:10? 1:30? 1:26?

if you can run a half in under 1:15, i have little to no doubt that you can pull a sub 3:10 out of your nuts deep in the race.

Depends a lot on your mileage. What will your average weekly mileage be in the 4 months leading up to the marathon?
1 ran 1:27 a month before my 3:09
The McMillan Calculator has a 1:30:05 as equivalent to a 3:10 marathon.
I ran a 1:25 in relatively close proximity to a 3:09 (though I slowed down a bit intentionally in the full when I realized that < 3:05 wasn't happening and I had a decent cushion to < 3:10. I'm a female and was running about 60-65 miles / week for the half, and 55-60 miles / week leading up to the full. (Which I realize doesn't make sense, but . . . such is life.)
Half Marathon time x 2 + 10 minutes equals marathon time.
Ritz = 1:00 x 2 + 10:00 = 2:10:00. Spot on for him.
Mike Morgan = 1:02:30 or so x 2 + 10:00 is 2:15:00. Spot on.
Me = 1:05:00 x 2 + 10:00 is 2:20. I've done 2:19:59. Spot on.
So you will need to run exactly 1:30.

This is right. If you are running 70 a week, a 1:32 might do it. If you are running 30 a week, 1:24 might not do it. Meaningless question without other data.
To get into Boston
1) Run a qualifying time before the registration date for 2012. Unless you have a backdoor way to get in, you aren't getting for the 2011 race based on a qualifying time you haven't run.
2) Be willing to waste at least an hour of your time trying to register
3) Hope you get your submit accepted in time before the race meets its max.
For my first marathon, I did a 1:28:45 about 2.5 months before I did a 3:07:45 -- so that was about 15 seconds off of the old 2 x HM + 10 rule.
For my last marathon, I did a 1:23:15 about 5 months before I did a 2:58:15. So that was about 2 minutes off, BUT I had to do a bathroom stop. If you don't count that, it was only about 1:15 off.
depends on how much you focus on the half. 5 months before my first bq (which was roughly 3:10:30) i "trained through" a 1:36 half. it remains my half pr.
with proper build and taper you can do things that mcmillian might not expect. i'd say if you can run under 1:40 now, then with some focus you can hit 3:10 in 6 months. you'll have to work for it, but it's within reach.
Current thread says you have 8 hours to sign up for Boston, so you better be starting your BQ race before it gets too dark.
