JR, I agree with you and feel that more bad races are run from kids not being properly tuned up rather than being tired. This point has been made many times but I will make it here for people who havent seen it;
How often does the second or third interval seem the easiest? Almost always, because the body is perfectly warm and in rhythm.On the other hand, how often does the first seem like a bit of a struggle!
I like to have my kids run 1x300m just slightly slower than race pace about 10-12 min before the race. Worked for me, and works for them.
Final caveat; everyone must experiment and find what works for them.
