The point you missed is that the handful of decent athletes who might have gone to SHU in the years to come will find roster spots and scholarships at better programs.

They cut mens AND women's track, and then added women's golf. That still constitutes a net gain in women's sports and a net loss in men's sports.
As has been said, there will probably be less than 10 people on the golf team. if they wanted to be closer to gender equity, they would have kept the larger women's sport and axed a smaller one. Not the opposite. Title IX has to do with number of participants too, not just number of sports available. That's why schools with huge football programs have "competitive cheerleading" and other nonsense.
Ray, I'd like to say that you're completely ignorant of Division 1 realities. Basketball and Football are king. You can complain all you want but it won't help your case. This is what the AD's like and the alumni demand.
D3 is totally different. But if you want to stay in D1 and have scholarships you should learn to play in the sandbox rather than complain.
Re/Calhoun, it's tough to determine absolute specifics, but it's a pretty fair case to believe that the assorted corporate UConn support would not occur without his great team. Complain all you want and I won't argue against you about Calhoun. The guy is a complete douche. I've met him several times. But he makes it happen for the rest of their athletics.
Well..........
The quote below from the Seton Hall press release indicates:
"The University provides more than $1 million per year to support the men's and women's track and field programs."
The link below is from the Department of Education, Office of Postseconday Education, Equity in Athletics web page.
Comparison of the data in the website (hopefully correct, as institutions have a legal obligation to provide the truth) and the statement on the press release indicates that SHU administration lied one place or the other. They certainly did not provide $1 million for track and field.
Additionally, the OPE web page indicates that they balanced their budget, so one might think this is less about money, Title IX, or any other reason, than it is about lazy administrators who want to concentrate on the absolute minimum in sports sponsorships while maintaining Div. I status.
Track & Field is measured not only by team success but also individual success as well. In the past 5-10 yrs the Hall has produced a 4X800 Champions of America Title at Penn Relays beating Arkansas by less than a second running 7:17. Many individuals Big East titles, and they have been one of the premiere schools for 400-800 runners in the Big East. They also produced a Olympian by the name of Kenia Sinclair who ran the 800 for Jamaica. I do not think the program got axed for competitive reasons, or racism reason (that is the most idiotic statement i've ever heard thus far). It was purely financial. The AD and administration should have warned JM that the program was in jeopardy. I havent been there in a number of yrs but it appears there werent any warning signs either.

Someone would have to show me how much revenue is generated by Seton Hall Basketball. I am not an insider, but I am aware that Jim Calhoun also brags about the revenue he brings into UCONN. Turns out it's not anywhere near what he claims. Not when you look at salaries, equipment, travel, everything associated with running their basketball complex, rental of HCC, scholarships, etc So if Seton Hall basketball is not nearly the program that the other Big East schools are, how much revenue is actually coming into the athletic department and used by other sports.

SHU is unique. Schools like, Tennessee, Alabama, ND, all have football programs that bring in huge amounts (talking millions) of money. Some of that revenue funds programs like womens volleyball, rowing, track, etc.
Now, SHU might have a FB program, but I would be surprised if it made a profit at all.
However, and Big East Basketball (mns) does make a profit for the school. How much, depends on that success and marketability of the program. For instance, Uconn gets much more television time than say USF. Yet USF is actually having a better year, but is not as well established for the last 10 years.
As for Calhoun, he has burned a few bridges, and will (mark my words) cut his own throat. It's just a matter of time.
Truth be told, it is all about how you look at the numbers and had nothing almost to do with Title IX stuff.
On face value alone you had a fully funded Program on both sides:
That alone is approximately $42K Full Tuition Room and Board x 30 or $1.26M, if you assumed you could now admit 30 more Non Track full rise students, the net is almost 1.5 times that, as some of the net new adnmits would be on some financial aid.
You have coaches Salaries in excess of $200K
Travel and Lodging: at least $150K
Overall Admin of program, equip, uni's etc probably another $75-100K
That being said, that is just the numbers piece.
It is a shame that this has happened, but in schools that are not totally carried budget wise by Football or consistent final 32 Tourney Hoops teams, this can happen anywhere.
They absolutely provide $1 million+ for track and field.Operating expenses alone for track and field are $280,000. This does NOT include coaching staff salaries, recruiting expenses, or scholarships. As others have shown, at a school like Seton Hall, scholarship and room and board can quickly add up.
