I realize that Chicago is always lauded over New York City on this website, and it should be, although it would be a bit mroe credible if the Johnsons didn't have business arrangements with Chicago.
But the Page One banner about the "Irish" New York City Marathon goes on to imply that the quality of the Kenyans in New York this November will somehow be subpar.
Hmm. They have Maragaret Okayo, the defender in both New York and Boston, where she beat Catherine Ndereba, and they have Lornah Kiplagat, who has sub-31:00 10k speed to go with her considerable marathon credentials. They've got the top two men from Boston, Rodgers Rop and Christopher Cheboiboch, along with Japhet Kosgei, who chased Tefaye Jifar (the Ethiopian who's also returning) to his course record in NYC last year.
As for New York's American contingent, which is also dissed, it would be a surprise if Marla Runyan and Milena Glusac do NOT end up with the second and third fastest U.S. women's times for 2002, behind Deena Drossin. For the men, there's every reason to believe Meb Keflezighi's debut will be in the same league as Alan Culpepper's, and Scott Larson, last fall in New York, beat some of those guys who just ran 2:14 in Chicago.
Chicago is fabulous, but you can make that case without unfairly shortchanging another worthy marathon.
