Carl Lewis
Carl Lewis
Judging by your other douchbag posts on this site, I'd say you are clearly the biggest douchebag of all time.
"i beat chriz lukezic at an XC invite in 1999. lukezic went on to beat webb, who beat legat, who beat el guerrouj, who beat bekele, who beat geb, who beat tergat. so technically that makes me the greatest runner of all time."

Some guy who beat you...oh yes, there were lots of guys who beat you, so it is one of them.
Henry Rono, and I think basedon range Said Aouita deserves mention....

who guys think is the greatest runner?
gayle sayers. maybe barry sanders.
I'm a short sprinter, and even for me short sprinting doesn't equal "running". Depending on what Bolt does in the 400, the top 5 are Bolt, Johnson, Geb, ElG, and Bekele.
And if I had to pick one, I'd pick whichever of those 3 distance guys had the best sprint speed over 400m--maybe ElG, I don't know. I think that the distance guys' sprint speed is closer to that of the sprinters, than the sprinters' distance speed is to that of the distance guys, even on a percentage basis.
Clearly the right answer is Dean Karnazes as his blog states in the title he is the "Ultramarathon Man" thus on the rankings of what is amazing it is a clear progression to marathon and than of course ultra's that allows Dean to own the title of greatest runner ever. I mean we all know that Bekele can run plenty of sub 27 10k's but can he win the human race? I doubt it.
I like Zatopek or Nurmi for distance runners. They were completely dominant in their eras. No one could touch them in pretty much any event they felt like running.
As for sprinters, I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but up until Bolt I think no one had the worldwide impact, longevity, and dominance of one Carl Lewis. The guy has certainly made himself unlikable lately, but he was great on the track - and LJ runway.

Lasse Viren. Only because Pre died.
You sir are even dumber than the guy who just said pre. The obvious answer is Bekele. He done the same double your still gobbling viren about and broke the same records plus he won in XC WC (10 timea i might add) and has an indoor WC. No one in history has been as versatile or dominate. I just have one question, do all you retards that are stuck in the 70's for running still have houses decorated in shag carpet and avocado green appliances? Because if you do its time to move on guys.
PS PRE sucks
Any list would have to include Jessie Owens, Henry Rono, Edwin Moses, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Halie Geb, Bekele, Tergat, Sauid Auito, Lassie Verin and Emil Z; however, it will clearly be Bolt if his career continues like it is going. (If I was forced to pick one, I would say Carl Lewis.)
A few people suggested Paula Radcliff; I would only put her at about 3rd or 4th as the greatest marathoner of all time. Keep in mind that Paula won a lot fewer majors than a lot of other women and I don't think her WXC,WC or OLG track or marathon performances have been too spectatulor. Also, if I remember correctly, Paula was rabbitted in her marathon record.
Bolt
I'd say Haile Gebrselassie; he's held the 5000 and 10,000 meter world records, and currently holds the world record in the marathon, 20k, 1 hour, plus many other "world's best". He also has two Olympic gold medals and countless World Championship medals.
I do think that eventually Kenenisa Bekele will surpass him, but currently I still think it is Haile.
Brandon Moen especially when he's on the mill

this seems like really sound logic to me.
i concur, this guy.

Nope see the problem is I once beat Matt Gonzales who beat Jorge Torres who beat Alistar Criag who beat Bekele who beat Geb who beat Tergat so really since i did it in 6 moves vs 7 I am the greatest runner of all time. Think about it.
Historically there are an infinite number of contenders ~ but Bekele's recent dominance from the 3k ~ 10k & XC is tough to match.
I would have Geb, El G, Coe, Viren to round out the top five.
