Reebok 5K is stacked and they are apparently looking for a fast race, somewhere around 13:00 could be possible. If Lagat's fitness is close to where he believes it is he could go under the current AR. Chelanga will also have the opportunity to PR if the pace is fast...

This means Rupp has already ran a 12:47!!! -
Lagat, Rono, Chalanga, Tergat,..they are all the same: Kenyan athletes. Not american born athltetes. How can you compare Kennedy and Lagat? Lagat is a Kenyan athlete who knew his days were numbered as a top Kenyan and switched citizenship to make more money, and lengthen his career. But he is not an American. To qualify for this "American" status one should have to go through the US high school system. Then they can qualify for an American record. We are no bette than Bahrain when we let aging runners from other coutries become US citizens hoping for a boost to our US team. De Reuck, Hellybuck, Kannouchi and Lagat all fall into that catagoy. Why not buy more Kenyans, Moracans and Ethiopians and just scap the US born runners?

Why isn't Chalanga running his NCAA regional? This means no double for him, 10K only at nationals.
-
Didn't the brojos post the end of Kennedy's AR a few years ago when Lagat was lining up for a fast 5K?
BK still has it. -
kennedy's record will most likely be broken on Sunday.I also think Chelanga will P.R with a sub 13.10 and most likely there will be several sub 13s.Though lagat is favorite, his chances are slightly less than usual.
-
I didn't know that DHS had added "must have attended US high schools" to qualify as an American. Can you post the link?

1/10. This thread is a poor job of trolling. Sub 13 in NYC? Riiiight. -

Wise move to not double for him. -

First of all I think you're wrong about having to be born here to qualify, but I'm just commenting on you saying that Lagat would not be a top Kenyan when at the last major international race he was the favorite heading in until he got injured. I believe he can still run sub 3:30 (probably 3:28 to 3:29 but I'll say 3:30), and last time I checked he would still be considered a top Kenyan because he would still be one of the favorites in any 1500 in the world. -
With every passing day the greatness of BK's record is realized.
His 12:58 was run in 1996. The WR progression went Aouita 12:58 in '87, Geb 12:56 in '94, Kiptanui 12:55 in '95...then Geb knocked the bottom out with 12:44 two months later.
Fast Americans and African born Americans have come and gone and BK's record still stands.

There is no comparison between the American and Bahraini situations. The athletes who compete for America do so after having lived here for a very long time. The ones who compete for Bahrain have virtually no ties to the joint. Ramzi, for example, continued to live in Morocco while competing for Bahrain.
-
Yeah! Lagat needs to have lived in America for 20 years, not 13.

After reading this thread I hope to God he gets it. Go Lagat!

Because the meet record 13:04 so far off 12:59, right?

How about this for an idea. Why not have some "real" Americans who can run with the "fake" Americans. -
Agreed. We are not Bahrain or Qatar. We do not pay athletes lifelong stipends to come here and exchange passports so they can go to their real home and live and train, a la Stephen Cherono/Saif Shaheen. Lagat has lived here since he came to Wash St. He actually had to go back to Kenya to qualify for worlds and olympics. Kannouchi lived in NYC for many years, working menial jobs to pay rent while trying to train. He never even competed for another country. Stop all the born here vs. 'foreigner' shit. We're all fvcking immigrants.
No wonder the American Indians hate us. -

Fact #1 - Kennedy and Lagat cannot be compared. Bob Kennedy is white and went to HS in the US which precludes any comparisons.
Fact #2 - Lagat's current citizenship proves that he is a Kenyan athlete as opposed to a US athlete. Since he is not a US athlete he simply cannot break BK's American record. Comparing results would be futile.
Fact #3 - Way too many Kenyans have been beating Lagat to consider him "a top Kenyan."
