Hi Sarah!!!
How's it's going?
You seem to be doing FANTASTIC!!
Hi Sarah!!!
How's it's going?
You seem to be doing FANTASTIC!!
Wow this thread got busy in a hurry!
RLAG, WATC nailed it. I'd like to hit 3:10, McMillan Calc pegs it at 3:09 off that 15k I did 3/29. Boston was tough last year, so I'd be happy with something in the 3:15 range.
Also, I was looking at the Pfitz plan for 70+ from advanced marathoning. Is that "volume 2"? I'm looking forward to it.
WATC - I can't fathom this triathlon thing either. We have an Ironman contract here in town, and since I work in a running store, we see a lot of them. I just don't have the urge. BUT, good luck in the sprint!
As far as dragging the Garmin to Boston, I'll probably leave it on the one-mile auto-lap, because I need the more immediate feedback to keep myself together. Plus I want the entertainment. Last year I found it to be kind of lonely.
Female Master -good luck! If you're watching your pace go from 6:30-7, I probably will never see you, lol.
NLS- awesome trail run. I love them. There's a local store here putting on a seven-race points series of trail runs starting in May. Hooray! Including a 7 miler on Halloween, in the dark, at an old sanatorium. eek!
Keep it up ladies! (Bostonbostonbostonboston!)
Great training everyone and good luck to those headed to Boston.....I ran it last year. I have yet to equate fun and marathon but, I've only run two so, maybe at my next one:)
Good week of training capped by a 3 hr run on Sunday. I found someone to run 2 hrs of it with me and we are doing repeat miles tomorrow night so, I may have finally found someone to break up some of my lonely runs. (I've been the one whining about it!)
Anyway, the long run was windy. I took a short break after 2 hrs to regroup for the last hour on my own and I thought my muscles had turned to cement...that was a painful 5-10 minutes before I could get moving again...I suppose I can blame it on being 40....usually I just blame things on my dog but, he wasn't there:)!
Have a happy training week all!!!
Also, I was looking at the Pfitz plan for 70+ from advanced marathoning. Is that "volume 2"? I'm looking forward to it.
Hi Tracy -- Volume 2 of the book came out late last year. In that version, the "over 70 mpw" plan has been recast as "70-85 mpw". That version's a lot tougher than the "over 70 mpw" plan featured in volume 1.
The "over 70/volume 1" plan (18 week version) brought my time down from 3:56 to 3:32 (and I could probably have run around a 3:24 on a better course, which a half five weeks later bore out in terms of my finishing time). I used it after spending six months building up an 80 mpw mileage base. So, if you're not ready for a coach, I think that plan is the next best thing.
Vol 1:
Vol 2:
Hope that makes better sense. :)
What a great thread this week! I somehow missed it last night (I was bleary-eyed after driving back from Chicago), and started another one, which can and should be ignored.
Let me add garmin sophistication to the things that impress be about this group. It's not that I'm technically challenged (really!), it's just that I hate reading instruction manuals - and so I've never used my garmin to the extent some of you use yours (multiple screens? wow!). Frankly, I rarely use it at all. I have the same problem as darkwave: it seems to cut off on me in many of the areas I run. So it mostly sits in my bottom drawer.
I aspire to be as smart as cats when I get back to running (hopefully, later this week).
Good luck at Boston, tfltft!
Patti Welcome! I am sure you could tell everyone here about your Boston experiences, you have torn the course up back in the day. In fact you were one of the first peeps that inspired me as I peeked into Runners World, again back in the day. Correct me if I am wrong haven't you run a 2:37 a 2:35 and a 2:38 then 2:27.51 for the US recod at the time!!!!!! All at Boston!
I am pretty good, back to training after a long haitus but FAITH has been the biggest tool to healing. Hoping to race again once I relocate South later this month and acclimate to warmer climes than up-state NY.
Welcome to the thread, please email me so we can catch up more. How are Dan, Raven and Aaron?
Ciao Bella!
Hi Patti,
You and I met in 2004 at the Germantown 1/2 marathon, I still have a picture of you and I (you were at the awards ceremony). I was wondering if you would find your way back to the women's training thread!
Goodness -- "Patti" as in Patti Catalano? We have a legend on the board this week! I hope you'll hang around in future weeks, Patti, so we can soak up some knowledge from you.
Hi Sarah!!!
HI azrunning and HUMBLED and racing/runnng women!
Germantown, nice course! I had a wonderful time. As I remember I had just started back up running again. (My racing days are over...never do I want to race again)
Well, I was training heavy duty...truly into it, 120 miles a week the whole shabang....let's see, broken foot, lyme disease 3x on top of the physical stress of marathoning does to you. I fell about 6 weeks ago while running with the kids and really did some damage to my wrist, shoulder, knee...not broken but can't swing the arm.
In any case, chocolate works wonders...not good for my thighs, but soothes...lol! Oh I laugh, but gosh, I sure wold enjoy not enjoying my chocolate.
Walking some, did 5 this morning, it's not the same but it's better than nothing.
Sarah, kids are doing great...absolutely great. I've been blessed. Aaron is 6 2 200. Raven (beauty) is a willowy 5 8 at age 12. They run 5 days a week. Not racing. Aaron would like to do the javelin.
So, you are moving...down South? Hmm, great! Georgia by any chance. I'll be there in April of next year.
Haha! chocolate, well we all have our hinderances :o) Patti so sorry to hear of your fall, I better keep you in my prayers. It is so funny you would pop up here because I was just wondering about you a few days ago literally.
Yes I will be fairly close to GA, lets meet up in a year if not sooner...
Are you doing any speaking engagements? Hey did your email address change, the last one I wrote (eons ago) did not go through!
So glad you are around, like a breath of fresh air :O) Heal up woman!
Sarah!!! Yes, we change to a new server quite a bit ago. Sorry.
Ya'know I dont' have yours anymore either...our computer crashed, hence new server.
No, not speaking, attending a rabbits show.
Sister Sarah!!
No wonder we've been not intouch. Our computer crashed a while agoa nd we seitched servers when we got back online.
No, not speaking...attending a rabbit show.
Patti please drop me a note at sk26two@gmail.com so I can get your new info. Thanks! Tons to share... Till later then...
Sarah - thanks so much for the advice. The physical therapy for the achilles is going to be primarily massage focused on that area (though some strengthening as well) -- so I'm not delaying massages, I'm just focusing on that area first, and then will shift to a "regular" sports massage. Unfortunately, I only have so much time in a week, or I'd do both.
Had my first appointment this morning, and already feels much better (though that may be partially the placebo effect).
TFLTFT, that Halloween race sounds awesome.
RNRpac -- I agree with you on marathons /= fun. I like running hard and then being done in 20-45 minutes, taking a day or two easy, and then being able to hop back into running. It's not just the length of time running in a marathon that bothers me, it's the time you have spend tapering before and the recovery time after that would drive me nuts.
Patti -- I'm thrilled that you're here! And I share your love of chocolate, which I maintain is the perfect recovery food.
RLAG - yeah, I have vol 1. Thanks for the images. =)
This should be cool because I feel like I'm doing similar stuff to you, just like 6 months behind. First marathon, Memphis 2007, 3:32:59. Second, Boston 2008, 3:32:01. Third, Memphis 2008, 3:15:08. Fourth, Boston 2009, ?!?!. Then shoot for 3 flat in the fall ... somewhere. Indiana and Ohio marathons the primary contenders.
So I will probably do the schedule in the first volume, because I really like the mileage and workouts. I have two "volunteer" coaches who can probably help me modify that plan if need be.
Patti - so incredible to see you on here.
So weird to not be running much this week. Off today (with massage, yay), 4 miles tomorrow, 5 Friday, maybe a couple on Saturday.
tfltft HI!!
Have a great run in Boston!
Ya'know I never liked to cut down for races becaseu I never knew what to do with all of the ENERGY and TIME on my hands.
First few marathons I cleaned the apartment...top to bottom, even waxed the floors. Of course, I couldn't sleep before the marathon and hence I went to the starting line exhausted. Only to have LOTS and LOTS of energy a few days after the marathon.
The second worse thing I ever did, was do the carbo load. Back in 78 it was the rage. I did the depleteion and then ate a few days later nothing but carb's. I felt FAT and I went SPLATT!
I finally surrended to "MY WAY!!!!" (imagine hearing Frankie boy singing).
I ran the last ten, seven days relatively easy or close to making my feelings of confidence soar. At the same time always repeating.."I can do this..."
I'd do a confidence builder workout...similar to ones I had done the fews weeks before a major marathon. Only this time instead of pushing myself each and every lap I'd feel like I was running on clouds due to the rest.
It's very easy to fall into the trap of "I don't think I did enough and I'll squeeze one more long run in". I did that too...doesn't work.
I settled on like I said, feeling of confidence and running to the point of "YES!!! I can do this....(insert goal). Of course, I also learned to get the soaring like an eagel feeling with short runs.....lol! ( I had to learn that one too)
It was a process for me much like it is for you, I imagine.
One of the biggest things I learned that I'm absolutely proud of is.....I finally learned how to SLEEP the days before an upcoming major race.
I learned how to use the abundance of energy (and not clean house). I also taught myself to relax (if that can ever happen). I learned to enjoy TV by using the clicker. Lots of power in the clicker. After growing up in house when we had to all take turns standing by the tv to change the channel, I found the clicker is loaded with power. LOL!!
Patti,
What an honor and pleasure it is to have you here! I love to read ANY article on you! You were always full of energy and were one of the toughest competitors I read about...So thank you for joining us.
Hope you continue to add insight and guidance. It's really funny about the carb/depletion issue, I was doing research on this over the last few days--should I, shouldn't I??? Then I came to--No, I'm going to carry on like I always have! It's funny how one's brain can get crazy during the tapering period. I've been going crazy this week (shampoo carpets!). HAHA!!! My house looks better than it has since I started my "official" marathon training period (I'm NO Betty Crocker/Martha lady---my poor hubby).
Last week my husband was cooking dinner and altering one of my outfits (I was at work)...my 18 y.old thought this was quite funny.
Have a great week.
HI female master!
I know exactly...my hubby does the same thing...something else huh?
How sweet it is to have supportive parters, who don't notice they are being supportive. They are just doing what comes natural...gotta luv'it.
Remember to take it easy...starting right now...house work is over...unless, of course, you are just doing it to make yourself feel better. No effort...no scrubbing floors, or walls, no painting the outside or the inside....no tilling for the garden....no raking...no waxing floors..no baking cookies (you'll eat'em)....gosh, huh? Life for the tapering off period is a hazard. LOL!
Go to the movies...I did! Many time I'd sit at Chestnut Hill Mall in Newton, MA. and watch back to back to back movies..ALL DAY!! (and no, no popcorn)I'd just get lost in the movie.
So, I've always been a looker on this thread and have never really said anything..
So I figured that now was as good a time as any!
It's amazing to read everybody's workouts! The miles, excitement, support...I love it! It makes me happy to know that running affects so many other people too!
Whoever started this thread--IT'S AMAZING! I never thought I could find a place to talk with other women about my workouts and have them share such great insight and encouragement! Truly, it's an amazing gift.
For all those heading to Boston: GOOD LUCK! I could never imagine running a marathon (it's a little bit too long for me), and it's amazing that you all are able to! I will try to catch any live footage of it that I can and I'll be thinking of you ladies grinding it out.
Anyways! I hope to become a regular poster here in the next couple threads. I am currently just getting back into running (which, it was a chosen break, which I wish I never would have taken...it's been a rough couple months). I am back into it now and just doing easy runs before I start hammering out workouts again. I am hoping I can get back into my old shape here soon to tackle some good races next fall. Competing just scares me sometimes if I feel I am not prepared...hopefully some of you can agree with me :)
I'll leave it at that! Good luck at Boston ladies!!
And hopefully I'll get to hear from y'all soon!
Welcome to you Sticky R, that name makes me grin ;o) because I think of Summer running and humidity and well sticky!
To chime in on your point about being prepared for races, until I got hurt in 2005, I always had a goal race I was prepping for, everything from the mile to the marathon... then a long term injury (which I'll not bore you with) kept me from training properly and out of racing.
Talk about a fish out of water, I could no longer goal set since my body would not cooperate.
Thankfully I am coming back with many weeks of base training, but I do have this ansgt of hopping into a race and hammering! It is like I got thrown off the racing pony and having a hard time remounting.
I think once I get in some solid speed work I will feel more like the whole thing is doable again. I guess I just need to lighten up a little and work on the aspect of enjoying it versus trying to win etc..
Look forward to hearing about your progress and perhaps we can compare notes.
