Up to this point, we could use some seemingly legitimate excuses for why we have fallen behind the rest of the world. Sunday morning, Paula Radcliffe shattered all of them.
American runners can't compete because:
1)We weren't born and raised at altitude or (more to the point) haven't had generations upon generations of ancestors born and raised at altitude. Radcliffe has neither going for her.
2)If you aren't on EPO, you have no chance, so since I'm not on EPO, I have no chance. All of Radcliffe's recent drug tests have been published, of course all negative.
3)American runners are too spoiled as children. You have to be from a third world country to have enough desire to compete with the Africans. Radcliffe didn't grow up rich, but not dirt poor either.
4)You can't run fast on the track while training for the marathon, so I would have to sacrifice my track performances (i.e. shoe contract bonuses) to run the marathon, so I'll wait until I'm over the hill on the track to start running marathons. Radcliffe's fantastic summer on the track speaks for itself on this issue.
To sum it up, we're out of excuses. It seems like Americans are starting the marathon sooner (Hauser, Shay, Baker, Verran, etc.) People have stopped sucking their thumbs and whining about having to compete with African freaks who grew up at 100,000 feet and had to run twenty miles to school every day. If a middle class white girl from sea level run 2 1/2 minutes under our "A" standard, we are out of excuses.
