Get him a prescription for Viagra. Seriously. He will appreciate it.

He'd probably appreciate a high class call girl. If that's a bit much you at least need to take him to a tittie bar.
50 different beers. 1 for each year.If he likes beer he will love it.

50 different women. One for each year and state.
Another one close to 50 here, and another one who barely tolerates gag gifts.
What I'd recommend is something that'll make his life easier, more fun, or give him a break from a mundane that he normally wouldn't make. Is there a time you could meet him back home, in Arizona, or a fun place in between? Then send him credits for airfare or pay for a night at a lodge or something like that. Tix to a prime Brewers series, preferably if you can make it with him. Gift card for expensive auto detailing he normally wouldn't spring for, or maybe a home- or yard-related tool or service he'd like to have/do but hasn't because of time.
A card with a short, heartfelt guy-style note is fitting and should be sent. Maybe the gag can be there.
But a strong second of doing something where you can spend time together doing things you mutually like or that YOU'LL tolerate because it's your dad's special day-- or a reminder of it if you can't be there.
Well, since he is in Wis. send him a plane ticket to visit you and then do some cool stuff with him over a few days.
Others can give him gag gifts, but not you.
If you can't afford the ticket, then something related to what he enjoys doing.

AZ? 50 yrs. old? That's easy. A nice hooker.
You are welcome.
Of course he may have one already, but I got an ipod when I turned 50 three years ago. It has made a world of difference for me on my commute (oh yeah, there is a converter that allows me to use the car radio. Pricey but great). I download all sorts of podcasts that makes the time fly by.
A couple of DVD ideas
this film from 1984
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087799/
the woman that starred in it turns 50 this year
or you can get a film from the year he was born
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053137/
or get a CD with the top tunes from 1977
(the year he graduated high school)
songs like Freebird, sure there was disco then
but still some good rock and roll, Foreigner
and Steve Miller Band "Fly Like an Eagle"
Heart's "Barracuda", Aerosmith, ELO, Bob Seger, Supertramp.
Also in '77 you've got the death of Elvis
and the first Star Wars movie came out
Has he got "That 70's Show" on DVD?
Gag gifts?
A disco compilation CD from 1977
Bee Gees, ABBA, Rose Royce working at the Car Wash
The Commodores, K.C. and the Sunshine Band

Or if you cannot afford the ticket, offer him the invitation to go to visit you and spend some time with him seeing the sights in Arizona. Plus it's been a long winter in the midwest. This might be just the reason he's looking for to get away from the cold and snow.
Otherwise, as others already mentioned, arrange something like during the summer where you all can spend some time together.
I can offer you a great idea for the present. Imagine that it is a hobby too. U can give wooden 3d puzzle to assemble 3d wooden toy. They are so realistic that suit adults even more then children. You can order such puzzles from http://www.woodencity.com.au or from http://www.amazon.com. They are great reduced wooden models, all parts rotate and move the vehicle. U can buy a London bus, biplane, chariot or something according to your choice. Good luck!

If he's turning 50 this year, he likely graduated in 86 or maybe 87.
It looks like a wooden model vendor resurrected this thread. The OP's dad turns 60 in 16 months.
Gag gifts are the worst. Unless they are related to a personal experience. And even then they rarely work well.
Skip the gag gift, be there on or around his birthday if you can, tell him you love him, and don't be a d!ckhead to him, your mother, or your siblings for the entire day. I'm 51 and I approve this message.
get him two 25 year old hookers...

dude you are off by a full decade! If he's 50 that stuff was big when he was in grade school.
I turned 50 a couple of years ago. I didn't want to depend on my family for cool gifts, so I got myself:
Trip to the Pre Meet
Tix to the Eagles
Tix to Tom Petty/Steve Winwood
A 10 day trip to the British Open at St. Andrews plus 7 rounds of golf
A trip to the CFB national championship game in Dallas.
I think my kids made me a card and the wife made me a really nice carrot cake. Which is nice.
The original post was from 2009, so that is the correct time frame. Still lame, but correct time frame.
Nobody knows your father better than you, you had enough time to learn his tastes :) I guess the most widespread gift today is elite alcohol, but I never presented anything like this. A friend of mine gifted his father a set of remote control planes to play together, I think it is a very nice idea, gifts like this make people closer + they are rather entertaining at the same time. To be honest, I am planning to buy something like this for my son for Christmas, already checking a review on top 2017 planes for beginners at http://rcstate.com/4-best-remote-control-planes-for-beginners/ . As for the gift for a 50 y.o. I love the idea of 50 different beers, really.
