Derrick impresses at Washington

You can be 19 as a freshman but turn 20 that calendar year when you are a sophomore and therefore not be considered a junior. The junior list would put Derrick somewhere in the 5-8 range.

Chapa, Salazar, Virgin, and Clary however were under 13:50. Plus Tegenkamp, Pre, Rupp, Ritz, Goucher, Sanchez, Torres. Scharsu and Jeff Nelson did. A runner from the University of Illinos went 13:48 in 1982. Jeff ??

So you win the bet. However how many 18 -19 year olds have gone 13:44 indoors?

Everyone quickly forgets about Matt Winthrow's stellar freshman year. He made world cross and ran 13:35. Too bad he never progressed.

Taking nothing away from Derrick, but based on his HS performance and NCAA cross, 13:44 is perhaps only a couple seconds faster than what I would expected. There have been quite a few sub-13:50 NCAA freshman, but Derrick is a year younger than just about all of them...that's what most impressive.

Fernandez is a few weeks younger than Derrick and he will go under 13:20 this season, mark my words. Fernandez also gets more exercise at night because he's such a stud.

He soloed a 409 at the state meet his senior year. He was pretty fast in HS but because he ran a a very small school I don't think his name got out.

Yes, he was a freshman, but Withrow turned 20 that year, so he wasn't a junior.

What is Derrick's 5k pr? Outdoors? I care more about his improvement curve than him vs. fernandez. Also, an opening 5k performance, indoors and solo, isn't too much to gawk about.

For the last time, nobody's gawking. It's a notable performance. Some of you guys expect every great runner to run a 25 second pr right awayin college. A distance runner like Rupp gets slammed if he "only" runs 4:00 for an indoor mile. 13:44 by a true Amercian freshman run indoors in January I'm certain has never been done, and probably only Pre Sanchez,Torres, and Rupp have run faster at his age. Ritz and Withrow were not true Juniors there freshman year.

Nobody is going crazy. Actually it appears the opposite and its not getting as much credit as you would expect. I suppose its because we are in an upswing in American running and nothing is shocking anymore and that definitely is a good thing.

Virgin did not he had pericarditis outdoors freshman year. Teg was a redshirt when he ran 13:44. I am almost certain Nelson did not.

But i believe Withrow was still a freshmen and 19 when he ran 13:35 unattached at Oregon or something. Correct me if i am wrong though.

Are those entry times?

does anybody know why the results only go 13 deep when there were 20 originally entered in the race?

im curious as to what happened to those extra 7
