Why on earth is anyone running on the track during cross country season?

so i dont think this is that big of a deal. i think he was just trying to be modest and not compare himself with the likes of a wetmore who would, up until this year, have colorado come out of nowhere, which was always expected though, to throw down at big twelves and then at nationals. i wouldnt take that comment too seriously. also, he didnt say that were only going to do good if were lucky, he said we need things to fall into place on the right day which could take some luck! most people just heard the, we need to be lucky part.
I know Dave Smith and he is a f@#$ing genius. And he is not as laid back as he appears, he gets really fired up. He is crazy too. He used to talk about "slamming" his girl friend in the locker room 15 minutes before his races. He was also a really good runner. At the age of 34 Dave Smith was still able to run a 4:04 mile at Texas Relays. There is a lot more to Dave Smith than meets the eye.
Dave Smith is excellent.
He is knowledgeable, ran at a high level himself, and is a really really nice guy.
I can see clearly why kids would go run for him. He does have it going on right now.
"Why on earth is anyone running on the track during cross country season?"
Might try asking the worlds best distance runner that same question as he stay's on the track through his entire build up for the World Cross Country.
The course is accurate. They were running the same lap the high school girls do at the Cowboy Jamboree.
German always looks relaxed. he looks relaxed in his all out sprint, when running an 834 and when having a "bad race' at footlocker. thats the way he runs and thats why he is so good.
regardless of whats been said so far regarding smith
I thought this video was more a showcase of smith
than of his athletes
Loved the guys confidence, and that team really has a great sense of humor.
regardless of championchips, there is something special going on at OSU and I can smell it a mile away.
Also shows how bright fernandez is to choose him, as I believe that he hides his brilliance as well.

You don't "have" to win just be German Fernadaz at most of your races.
Who should he be at the "other" races?
Your argument over the miles being short is completely arbitrary. If distances in XC are so random, then there is a likely possibility they could've been long.
Also, at least on the second to last one when they run 4:27, Lowe is pushing it up a hill and Fenton asks him about his effort on the uphill after that rep, so I'm guessing they weren't all screaming fast downhill miles.
Lastly, as for your question about how this workout compares, Vail says at the end when being interviewed that this is the fastest he's ever run the workout.
um everyone else in this workout is wearing hats and gloves and long sleeves. except german. no shirt on is a frosh move.

I know I'm gonna come off as a hater, but, with the exception of the last interval, I don't see that workout as remarkable.
I feel like most halfway legit d1 guys could run something like 4:45, 4:45, 4:40, 4:40, 4:35, 4:32 .
The best shape I ever got into was around high 24s for 5 miles, and I could crank miles in the 4:4xs all day capping off with a 4:28 or something.
I dunno, maybe I'm wrong.
I have ran the OSU course four times over my collegiate career and to me..it seems pretty badass for these guys to crank out a 4:16 on the end of that workout if it was over the last mile of their 8k course. It has some downhills but also alot of up hills and finger loops, with loose mulch on the hills, not conducive to fast times..so if that is the case, it was a solid workout by all involved.
Maybe, OSU realizes that every workout isn't a test of what you can do for the workout.
Many guys could do this workout (with the exception of the 4:16), but the difference is that I bet many of the guys would be way over their head doing it.

Webb could use some of this
You clearly don't know anything about Alan W's career, especially his most recent year.
It's practice.
i don't want to take anything away from the workout - again, it's a workout, not a race... but just wanted to add a possible thought to the mix.
we did this workout in college on our cross country course as well. we did 5 x 1 mile for each of the miles on the 8k course. The 5th "mile" is short and fast because 8000m is less than 5 miles so the last one is always faster than the previous 4. just a thought that if perhaps that's what they did, the last mile of 4:16 would be closer to a 430 true mile and more comparable to his other splits - thus, not getting out of control.
then again, maybe his last mile was in 4:16 and he ran controlled and he's ready to roll. i agree, it's fun to analyze these workouts, but until you put 6 of them together at the big dance, it's just estimated benchmarks as to where you're at.

yeah, we watched that this morning. as a college coach, i can understand him though. however, he said, "we'll be relying on luck." i think luck is just stupid. i appreciated the fact that he was honest, but he needs to have a plan. that's something you say to your wife, alone over dinner. you tell the team, "we are strong: we are going to have 2 front runners, followed by a pack of 3 and a pack of 2. if each of you follow your plan that we've rehearsed throughout the season, we'll achieve our objectives." although, i did enjoy his laid back style.
Do you really think Dave Smith has no plan? Maybe he is displaying some humility, or could he be 'psyching out' idiots like you who will assume that saying winning will take some lucj means he has no plan for the race. Have you noticed that OSU has finished much higher than people were predicting each of the past 3 seasons?
Coach Smith has a plan, and that plan might just win them a title, but like he said, it WILL take some luck. All their runners have to stay healthy, be ready to run on Monday Nov 24, and have a good to great race for them to take home the title over the Oregon Ducks.
So weather it is getting lucky because your #5 guy had the race of his life or because your competitor's #3 runner bombed and race 15 seconds slower than normal, it's still getting lucky. And that is how a championship is won... or lost.
