The word "elite" gets thrown out on here all the time, mostly in phrases like "name elite athletes who work full-time." Yet, no one seems to really be able to tangibly define "elite." Please do so now...

Triathletes seem to use the word often, so I think it applies to anyone who has ever participated in a triathlon.
some one who can drink 12 pints on a sat nite and still get up for a 12 mile run sunday in the Pheonix Park...thats elite enough for me
No one can "define" elite for you. "Elite" is a relative term. It is also a subjective term. That's like trying to define "good" or "bad" or "warm" or "cold".
i consider anyone on the all time top 100 list in a championship event elite, that is how i define it.
Runners tend to be stingy with the term. In sports medicine, "elite" usually loosely refers to athletes in the top 10% of the college ranks and beyond (semipros and pros).
Isn't there an elite bus at races? Elite corrals?
Well, what definition is used to get in the elite bus or corral?
Elite: Really good at something
National Class: you can "compete" with the best in your country. For Track this would be hitting the oly trials/USATF nationals B standard
World Class: You are good enough to go to olympics/world competition. If you have hit the IAAF A standard you are world class.
When I think "elite" I think of someone who at least has some kind of sponsorship.
If this is your criteria, then elite = well connected
