What 5k times should I have if I want to start talking to college D 1 coaches? D 3 coaches?
Also what time do I need, not to get a scholarship, but at least recruited?
Thanks

I would say:
around 15:00 or below- D1
around 16:00 or below- D2
Also, run races other than your school sponsored races, show some versatility. 10k's, 8k's etc. Give coaches more to work with than just a 5k.
Would going under 17 mins get you noticed by a D-3 school that you have shown interest in?

It depends on the school. There are a lot of D3 schools that can beat some D1 schools. If you're interested in a particular school, go to their web site and look at the times that are competitive in their conference. If you could be an asset to the team, you would be recruited, assuming you have the necessary academics.
If you run it (a good time), they will come.

If it's a legit course and you ran sub-17:00 as a junior, sure. Most (all?) of the teams that win DIII Nationals have *at least* one guy in the scoring five who matches that description.

I would say a d3 school would look at you if you have been consistently under 17 and there is also a possibility that a d2 may look at you if you show some interest in the school. Like I said previously, don't limit yourself to the 5k.
Well you want to run times in track too. I have a friend who never broke 17 all of high school but ran 2 flat and 4:35 and got recruited to run the 800 in college. Freshman year, he ran cross as the 8th man on the team, but as track rolled around he couldn't compete due to suspension because he was caught drinking twice. But he kept training with the team. He was allowed to competed the meet before conference in the 5k and ran 16:13. Then he ran the 800 at conference and got 1:58.7.
Let's see. A friend of mine ran 15:30ish and ran for D1 Ohio U. I ran 16:07 as a Junior and got recruited by a few D3 schools (I was injured all of senior year). I was on a recruiting trip to a D3 school, and I was there with another kid who'd run 17 low that fall. So somewhere in there will get you where you want to go.
The best advice is from the guy who said to look at some conferences and see how you stack up. The key to enjoying college is picking a school where you'll be comfortable. A full ride doesn't do you much good if you hate where you are. So look for schools you might want to run for, but look at them in all the other areas too. Good luck.
